So my MBP arrived today, with one problem

The USB port on the right side does not work. I can confirm this because the USB mouse I bought works on the left side port, but not the right. I am pretty confident that it is only the USB port, since I am running an ethernet connection as we speak.

Obviously, I have to take it to the MacStore, at least in my mind. Unless someone knows some way to fix this?

If I do take it down the street, does anyone know how long it will take for them to fix this for me? Will their ****-up cost me any money? I did enroll this MBP in Applecare, so I should be fine, right?

It won't cost you any money. And it will probably be quick, or they may replace your MacBook Pro with another one.

Even without AppleCare, your Mac is covered for one year under warranty.

personally, if they say it takes more than even 1 day to fix it, i would say then i just want to exchange this for the same one i have.

because ur still even under the return policy

Yeah I really don't see replacing a port taking anymore than 20 minutes of actually work.

Well, hopefully it will go well, I'll update you guys tomorrow I guess.

That's a rather big assumption. Do you really think they'd fix a broken port in 20 minutes? If I were you, I'd get a new MBP, rather than attempt to have this one repaired. Demand a working project, not a patched-up one.

Now it could very well be in software. You can try resetting the PRAM or do a quick reformat and install since you haven't barely used the machine. If the port still doesn't work take it to the Apple store. Tell them your job requires you to have a laptop and you can't be without it and request strongly that you get an exchange in the store.

It'll take quite a bit longer than 20 minutes to replace the port, especially if the logic board needs to be moved around. I'd get a new MBP, and make them deem this one inoperable upon first use (IUFU).

Edit: I just checked it looks like the right USB is on the logic board, so they would have to replace this. I say go for the new one because sometimes when you take apart Mac laptops that are really compact the chasis can get a lil worn.

If you just got it, and you bought it online or have an Apple Store near you, ask for exchange. They will do it with no questions.

USB ports are usually part of the motherboard, indicating replacement of the USB port requires replacement of the entire motherboard.

I thought, with online orders, store returns/exchanges could not be done. For his sake, I hope I'm wrong though. If you do go to a store, I would demand a fresh MBP. With hardware, it seems things are never 'fully' fixed, at least in my experience with laptops.

Well I dropped it off today, the logic board is in fact, ****ed, and they are putting a new one in for me. I should be getting it back on Monday.

I'm considering going back tomorrow with the other stuff and just saying "look I dropped it off, and I've been thinking about it, and I'm kind of worried that I might be opening a can of worms, can I just have a new one?"

You should definitely have asked for a new one right off the bat. If you try that tomorrow, make sure you bring your receipt, warranty, etc. with you. It's possible they might grant your request, but they might also just say you already asked for your current one to be fixed.

Next time, follow the thread advice!

Indeed - you have a 14 days to return unconditionally, make use of it.

I was prepared to do that if there was any flaw with my MBP. I was totally ready for it, even if its just a single stuck pixel in the corner of the screen. I am that fussy. But then my MBP was flawless :)

Is it 14 days unconditionally to a retail store? Because i know my school follows the number of stick pixel rule to take it back.

The first MBP I got was a lemon. After talking with tech support, the technician arranged for the manager at the apple store to replace mine with a new machine. This was within the first 14 days, of course.

Because someone posted about how their MBP had a defective USB port? Are you serious?

No manufacturer is perfect, there's never going to be a 0% failure rate for anything.

What matters is what they do about it. If he came on here posting about how he had a problem and they sent it off to be repaired three weeks ago and they haven't even kept him appraised of the situation, that would be understandable.

But EVERY manufacturer is going to have the occasional defect slip past QA, that's just the way it is with mass production.

So they replaced the logicboard, I pick up my MBP and get on a train to DC to work on my music project, I get here, and guess what? Now my 1, A, and Q keys are not working.

Seriously, what the **** is going on?

This computer must have the mojo on it.

    "It just works" my ass.

I feel your pain... seriously im going thru issues with my new notebook too.

Apple is supposed to be one step above the rest tho and you pay for that thru the nose :/ so its kind of adding insult to injury.

Exchange it. Two things in about two-three uses when I've treated the damn machine like a baby? No thanks, I'm not interested in this laptop. Send it to the scrap pile.
