I need a laptop for school and i will be buying a MBP this week sometime. I am kind of low on money right now. I pretty much have just enough to get the computer and the Ipod. The MBP has a 1 yr manufacturer warranty on it i hear. Will this warranty be ok until i can get the rebate from the Ipod and buy the AppleCare warranty? Im guessing this will be 8-10 weeks? Unless Apple is ALOT better about getting rebates back than other manufacturers.

You can buy it up to a year after purchase, the problem is, you probably won't.

    :D

Very true. When I bought my first Mac, a little 12" PB, I wasn't sure I'd like OSX and thought I might not keep it very long. My intent was to buy the extended warranty after a few months if I decided I did like the system. Well, I kept the machine but forgot all about the warranty. Luckily, three years later, the machine is still running fine. Only problem is that the battery is finally beginning to fade away; it now only lasts for about 1.5 - 2 hours.

My advice, FWIW, is to get the warranty at the time of purchase if there's any way at all for you to pull it off. And congrats to you for deciding on a really nice notebook.

Actually bmwrob, I don't think AppleCare covers the battery...because its "wear-and-tear". Unless the battery dies a month after purchase or anything...

Apple offers 90-day complimentary phone support on new Macs as well as one year of standard warranty on new Macs. You can buy the AppleCare plan for your Mac anytime in the first year of purchase. Of course, its better to get it early as anytime a problem arises you can call AppleCare right away. So yeah, you can wait a few weeks or even a few months to raise the money to get the AppleCare plan.

Some say its not necessary for these extended warranties, but notebooks are constantly being moved around, the parts are more densely packed, and things break over time, especially electronics. So I'd recommend you getting AppleCare for your Mac. 3 years is quite a while for tech products, so its best to have support just a phone call away if anything comes up. And also it helps the resale value of the Mac even if you don't keep your Mac for three years. If you want to sell your Mac, people will pay more and have more confidence if the Mac has AppleCare with it; they know even if things come up Apple will help out, even if you don't :p.

You're right about the battery, Sam, but that wasn't the point I was attempting to make. Sorry, it's late, I'm tired and probably barely coherent. LOL

I was trying to emphasize how lucky I've been that the PB has done so well, and that the battery has lasted for quite a long time.

I see :p, well I guess I misinterpreted your statement. But its good news that your PowerBook lasted so long.

We have 4 (out of 7) dead PowerBook G4s in our computer lab--they kernal panic all the time. The department didn't even try to repair them--they bought new MBs and MBPs lol

So my impression is PowerBooks tend to break after 3-4 years of usage, I do not know about the new intel MBPs and I am still waiting for mine to come :)
