    I have a sleep problem.
Whenever I close the lid, sometimes the apple logo stays glowing for 3 seconds. It turns off afterwards but is this something to worry about? This is on my new Santa Rosa MBP. Also, if I don't wait long enough for the hard drive to go to sleep and open the lid, then it doesn't wake up from opening the lid and I have to hit a button. Is this normal?

The Apple logo stays glowing because the screen hasn't turned off yet; that is pretty normal, it takes a second or two (or in your case, a three ;)) to shut off the screen and shut off the hard drive.

For your second question, its because you opened the lid while the MBP was still preparing to Sleep. It hasn't even slept yet so how can it wake up :p? As you said, the hard drive hasn't slept yet, which means the MBP is preparing to Sleep. But you open the lid so the MBP just ignores your lid and is still preparing to Sleep. So the MBP assumed you want to Sleep with the lid open so it just Sleeps with the lid open. If you closed the lid and opened the lid again then it would wake up, but anyhow pressing a button does that too.

So no, there's nothing wrong with that. Its normal.

Should I worry about the fact that the Apple logo doesn't appear whenever I'm shutting down? It only appears when I turn on the computer.

The Apple logo isn't supposed to appear when it shuts down. Only when it starts up. So its fine :p.

Don't worry, I don't mind :). Buying a laptop is a large investment and switching to a new operating system is also a large transition, and asking lots of questions and being cautious is very normal. I'm just happy to help everyone out here :).

Sam if you're still here, I have a stupid question too :p Sara, sorry for using your thread.

Is there anyway to make a mac not sleep when you close the lid, like windows' "Do nothing when I close the lid"?

You will need to use a 3rd party app, like Insomnia X. The switch to sleep is hardware controlled, so there isn't a software option in OS X to turn it off. It is also not recommended to keep the Macbook on with the screen shut, as it blocks the fans.

Thanks guys. Yea I'm just worried cause everyone reports all these problems. So far, I have to say that I haven't faced any yet, no yellowing or crazy screen problems or any of the sort at least from what I can tell. and if i can't tell then there shouldn't be a problem anyway. I love my glossy Samsung =).

I did notice something odd recently though, perhaps because of the latest update, but possibly from something else - OSX actually built a sleepimage file and went to sleep on me when I left it idle...even though I had it on "plugged in/high performance" and told it to never sleep ..

    Ah well.

I would also like to know this. Seems like a basic PM feature?

I did however find a way to make it not come out of sleep when you open the lid. This is useful because there are lots of reported problems with the auto sleep feature. I've already had to force my laptop to shutdown once already because it refused to come out of sleep all together.

Anyway, I'd like to be able to configure it to turn off the screen with the lid closed but not actually go to sleep unless I tell it to. Is there a way to do this?

Then is there a way to have a Macbook run on an external display with the laptop screen off and the lid open like you can in Windows?

Ive read that it is not entirely true that its bad to leave the computer on while closing the screen

apple has a built in function called clamshell mode that if you have a mouse/keyboard and an external display you can close the lid and wake up the computer after you close it. it wouldnt really make much sense to include this feature if it was bad for the computer, also doesnt the hot air get pushed out the back?

anyone correct me if im wrong... im pretty new to my mac

Yes, you can use a third party application, InsomniaX, that allows the Mac's lid to close but not go to Sleep. I wouldn't recommend it though, as it will block the vents a bit.

Yea, generally making any laptop, especially a MBP, stay awake while you close the lid isn't necessarily a good idea.

For one thing, certain applications depend on the default Apple sleep functions to work, so they may have issues if you change those settings.

Also, as mentioned, since the MBP vents partly through the keyboard, it might lead to some heating issues.

Finally, you might forget that it's on and actually move it while it's on, which can be a very bad idea depending on what it's doing, especially if the HDD is writing a lot or if the optical drive is running. Can you imagine how much the head of your HDD would love it if you tossed it into your bag while it's still running and have it bounce against your books for 30 min? :p
