I ordered my 2.4 ghz 15” Macbook Pro through the Developer Hardware Discount Program this morning. I wish I could have just gone to the store and picked it up but you can’t do that if you want the discount. Unfortunately, it says it won’t ship until July 24-27. I’m excited and nervous at the same time to switch to a Mac from a PC. My question is how accurate are the shipping dates on Apple’s Order Status page? Is there a chance that the computer can be shipped earlier than the 24th? And also, why are the standard configuration 15” MBP orders backordered so long?

Apple's estimated shipping dates tend to err on the longer side. That's probably the latest you'll get your laptop, and it might ship earlier.

Apple's really good about their shipping - if you call, you could get it upgraded to overnight for free as well.

When I ordered, there was a 2-month delay in my estimated ship date due to the 160GB 7200rpm drive I configured it with. However, the entire batch of MBP was delivered a month before that date.

Sorry if I hijack your thread a bit, but I wonder if the educational discount for students is useable if you purchase from a physical Apple store. Is there any special reason your discount wasn't useable in a store? I'm a bit worried I might have to order online as well...

For me when I ordered through ADC, it actually took longer since they had to verify my student status and stuff ( w/ the paperwork that you are supposed to fax them)...Little tip, call them after you fax or email them the proof, and they will verify and release your order while your on the phone with them, which should enable to get it at least a day or two sooner.

So if I walk into a store and show them student-ID and fill in the papers right there, I'll still have to wait until I can get my laptop?

What if you haven't received a student ID? Is it possible to still use your highschool one?

Wow. I ordered mine on the 6th July with student discount in the UK and it still gave me a 24th-27th July ship date... The only thing I changed was the HDD to a 160Gb 7200rpm. Am I missing something...

Well, the changed HD should explain that. Ordering anything other than the "standard" configuration might increase the delivery time since they have to custom build that system and possibly wait for parts that are out of stock to arrive.

Thanks ollibolli. I was glad the delivery times from the HDD change dropped from 3 weeks to 7-10 days when I was obsessed with ordering a MBP but I am now craving for it. How it's worth the upgrade :(

I ordered through ADC, the ship dates are pretty accurate, probably going to run along the later end of the dates though.

Hmm, would it be possible to order and get the laptop shipped to an Apple Store so I can pick it up there? I might not have a permanent address for the first week or two when I get to the US, but I'd very much like to get my hands on the laptop as soon as I can when I get there.

I'm pretty sure you can go into a store and pick one up as long as they have it in stock if you are not changing the specs.

According to FedEx Canada, my package was pick up yesterday in China. Sucks that it happened on a Friday as I doubt they work on the weekends even with express shipping , but at least I know it's on the way.

Ordered July 6th, shipped July 14th. Stock MBP. I will change the HD once it arrives. :)

Even if I buy one with the Educational Discount? Sorry if I'm being a bit slow, but I didn't quite understand if using the Edu discount prevents you from picking up the notebook at once from a store since they need to verify your student status etc?

Apple stores will offer standard academic discounts with proof of enrollment at a higher education center - student ID card, letter of acceptance, tuition bill pay stub, being able to log into your .edu email account in front of an Apple genius, etc...

I think, if you have a little more time, maybe you should review what people all ready discussed in some other threads regarding to all the questions you have above. Maybe I would try to conclude your questions for you

When you got to US, try to get ur student ID first, whether if you have or not have permenet address, then rush into an Apple store and get whatever you want, if you don't need 7,200 rpm harddrive, nor 4G ram. You should be able to choose matte or glossy screen if they have anything in stock; otherwise you gotta wait or order online. The answer is confirmed that upgrating memory and harddrive by yourself would not void the warranty. Dont worry about any verification, you got your student ID, that is the best proof. Show them your ID and enjoy your student discount :) and try to spend sometime to look what people already discussed in different threads. Or, you can go to Apple.com, there should be some Apple sales people online to chat and answer your questions. Good luck!

So upgrading the HD yourself doesn't void your warranty on the MBP?

Or is it just the MacBook that lets you upgrade without voiding?

I talked to Apple sales person online when I purchased my MBP, so I think it could be applied to all Mac product, including Macbook. I think you can try to chat Apple online sales person to confirm everything before you make a move. Good luck! :)

Well if it doesn't void the warranty then I wouldn't have much of a problem with it. I have been building PCs for ages so I don't get scared easily. I will try and chat with Apple though to make sure.

I just figured that because you have to really take apart the MBP it would probally void the warranty. I know the MacBook is easy to upgrade the HD, but I want to make sure that my MBP doesn't get shunned for having 160 Seagate in there.

I would have just gotten it from apple but I am not paying nearly 300 bucks for a 160 gig harddrive. lol

Well, I have been reading all I can around here lately... It's just that people often don't say if they order online or buy directly from a shop, so sometimes there's a wait time mentioned and sometimes there's not. Also, I know that I can't use my Educational Discount in the swedish Apple Stores, I have to order online, which made me a bit nervous. Seems like Apple have different policies in different countries though.

I actually mailed the bookstore on the university I'll be attending yesterday, I'm sure they'll be able to give reliable answers to everything I was wondering :)

But thanks anyway for the helpful responses!

As far as I know opening up the notebook does not void the warranty. Damage to the notebook you inflict yourself is not covered though, which means you'll have to be really careful when you work with the internal parts of the notebook.

Replacing the hard drive on a MBP on your own is considered voiding the warranty. That said, it's a fairly straight-forward procedure and unless you botch the job a service tech probably wouldn't notice you had done it (assuming you put the original hd back when submitting it for service, naturally).

The Macbook has been designed so that you can replace the hd without opening the entire thing up, so replacing that is not considered to void the warranty.

lol Dal. Glad to hear your dream machine is on it's way. I phoned Apple today and the advisor said it's most likely to ship on the 20th July which is the latest ship date :(
