    MBP Hard drive overheated!

    My macbook pro is a little under a month old. Never dropped, never even touched harshly. Only lots of babying.

    Anyhow, the hard drive all the sudden freaked out. Now it is burning so hot that I can't touch the spot it is under. It just happened in windows when I was just about to play starcraft. This is wierd because it was fine when I was in Mac OSX just moments earlier. Well anyway, I check NHC and it says 77 degrees Celsius!! I turn it off immediately and take out the battery because I didn't want the heat to transfer over. The hard drive got so hot that it smells like solder in the room.

    I wait until it is cooled off and then I turn it on again with no battery. It doesn't turn on. The power cord is showing green so it should turn on. I listen to around the hard drive and I just hear a constant clicking noise. I then put the battery in without the cord and it turns on. I choose Mac OSX. I feel it heating up again and I can hear it whirring non stop even after everything has been loaded. I check iStat but it says it's normal temperature at like 52 degrees (relatively i mean compared to before) but it's burning hot where the hard drive is. I connect the cord and I see the memory controller temperature spiking up until 72 degrees from the low 50's!!!

    I turn it off immediately and now I am extremely pissed off. It better not have done damage to other components of the notebook. I smell the scent of burnt metal/solder throughout the room. I wouldn't be so pissed off if I hadn't gone into the apple store before telling them that I think something was wrong with my hard drive cause it makes a lot of clunking and clicking noises. They told me it was normal.

    What should I do? Should I demand a new replacement? How should I approach them? Cause I am super pissed and I'm sure others understand!

    I would be asking for a replacement and not a repair, sounds like its shorting out somewhere and causing it to overheat.

    Clearly the problem is reproducible. Take it into the store and they will see the problem for themselves. I don't think it would be unreasonable to ask for a replacement.

    Have you checked that both your fans are running?

    yea they're running at 6000 rpm and it won't cool it off at all. it only takes about 5 mins to get to the moment where it starts smelling like somethings burning

    Fans are not really responsible for keeping the HD cool, In most machines the HD isnt located near a fan or a fans heatsink. A notebook HD generates very little heat in normal circumtstances.

    In Apple's defense, I am sure they have many people coming in saying that they hear this or that and in reality they are just overreacting. It is unfortunate that you happened to be right and your hard drive died. You can ask for a full replacement, and they may give it to you depending on how long you have had it. Be sure to take your receipt with you. The good news is, it is highly unlikely the heat damaged anything else since it was only for a short period of time.

    Honestly Hoeboe2k this is a no-brainer. You are already upset about how the computer is acting despite what the Apple genius told you so the only solution is to take it back. Now if it's pass the 14 day exchange then they have to service it but if it's within the return policy definitely have the manager replace it.
    First and foremost, keep Windows out of this. Unfortunately Apple will not support you if you cannot produce this issue in OS X. Don't even tell them that it started getting really hot while in Windows.
    Apple does not support Windows, they only support the bootcamp utility so as long as you can boot up to Windows that's all they will support.

    Hey it's good guys. They decided to replace it cause it was stinking up the apple store with it's burning smell and because the problem was very rare and they didn't want to even try to repair it.

    Thanks for listening. I just really needed to vent out my anger.

    I am glad to hear that they are taking care of it for you. I know it can be frustrating, I went through 4 or 5 before I got a good one!
