Hey guys I'm really worried! Sorry if my grammar/spelling is bad, I'm typing this with my PSP :S Basically, spilled quite a bit of coke on my keyboard mostly. I freaked out and cleaned a lot of coke off my keyboard and stupidly turned it on after a couple minutes because i had to manually turn it off. i turned it off, removed the battery, and laid it on its side/upside down. no coke was coming out of the keyboard, there were just stains on the case/keyboard/the part that connects the screen. am i screwed?

I am not sure if the MBP has drains. I would totally disassemble it and clean it with alcohol. Even then you are probably screwed. Turning it on was a VERY bad idea. However if the notebook worked when you turned it on it might be less coke than you think.

I believe Apple have the special paper installed which changes color when it gets soaked by a liquid. They can void your warranty with this.

Let it completely dry for hours before turning it back on. If the system is still functioning fine then you should be somewhat relieved.

No unless your IT store is super nice. It is probably best to do the cleanup yourself and act like nothing ever happened.

ya but if the thing isnt toast right away the residue/sugar would probably do long term damage and im not sure i want to take it completely apart plus it would void my applecare if that paper thing isnt true. do you guys think the coke probably got in? oh, and should it be dry by tomorrow morning? thanks again!

Take it apart ASAP! Clean all the parts with running water from your sink. After that use distilled water. Set them up to try or use low heat from a hair dryer. Reasemble.

The longer it sits in there the worse the corrosion will get.

water wont damage it? im not all that handy and dont really want to make applecare a waste but if its that dire than i suppose it must be done? is it like a 99% chance that the coke got through? the reason im a little optomistic is because it worked after and no coke leaked so im not sure if any got in. am i ok to let it dry till 9-10 am? i really appreciate the help! i need to figure out what im going to do fast!

Absolutely not! I have had to work on many notebooks that have everything from milk to liquor spilled in them. You have to know what is damaged and what needs to be done. A bright LED flashlight is very handy.

You have to know the parts you are working on obviously. Certain alcohols can be used as well. Wine is by far the worst one since it's one of the harshest on the metal and printed boards. Time is ALWAYS your enemy in a liquid spill.

I also don't know why, but red wine seems to be worse then white wine. Or people just lie about how long ago it happened.

There are no macs where I work so I've never taken one apart YET. (knock on wood) Thankfully spilling it in my iMac would take skill. In my home I would get out the rubbing alcohol quick and possibly the sink depending how bad the pill is and where things are.

It is not that hard to open up the MBP to see if any coke got in. The MBP is a common notebook so there are alot of guides out there. Anyway the disassemble IMO is a must, whether to clean it depends on whether it is dirty or not.

p.s. I wont use any wine to wash lol. Get a bottle of 97% rubbing alcohol at the local supermarket. I believe most motherboard makers use water to clean the boards as using alcohol would be too expensive.

If it is hosed up, this is just another reason why it sucks that Apple doesnt offer an accidental damage replacement plan with their AppleCare.

I think the old one didn't have one.

The new keyboard is more sealed but I don't think its waterproof either.

As long as you ensure that the <insert piece of electronics here> is completely dry after hosing it down, water will not hurt it.

The main reason liquids kill electronics is because people don't properly dry out the item before powering it on, and then any remaining liquid causes a short.

I rescued a laptop which had coffee spilled all through the keyboard by fully taking it apart, washing it with water, and then drying it completely. It took about a week before I finally put it back together and powered it back on. That was over two years ago and it's still going strong today.

I had a Nextel phone that fell in a pool and was there for at least 5 minutes, submerged in the water. I let it dry for 3 days, powered it on, and it worked flawlessly until I lost it a year later.
