A couple of web sites are suggesting that the updated MBP will be announced Tuesday, 6/5. Has anyone else caught wind of this?

Yes, we've been talking about it for a while.

I think its likely, but at the same time I think the MacBook Pro's due for a major update...and normally major updates get a "special event" that has invitations sent weeks prior the event...

But the general statement about WWDC focusing on Macs and desktop is very likely, I think. The iPhone will probably get its own special event nearing June 29th.

i hope so...im desperate for a new computer, and im supremely curious about the mac OS.

i have been advised a few times that given what programs i use a windows machine will suit me better. but i've had captain cluster f***s in local highstreet computer stores/retailers telling me that vista should be avoided for now if possible.

i mean usually these guys will lie through their teeth to sell you anything, but there they were actually telling me not to bother.

in quick twist, after realising the samsung x65 will be no where to be seen for a while, im giving second consideration to getting a mac. and bootcamping windows xp (of which i have 2 legal copies) or doing parallels or something. i think that'll give me the better experience.

Expect this nearly every Tuesday until it happens. When a product line starts getting a little long in the tooth, the rumor sites start throwing dates around.

    ^agreed

my prediction is that a new macbook pro will infact . . . be released.

when, honestly makes no bloody difference, unless you are in some pretty obscure parts of the world, there is prooooobably an apple store somewhat close to you, when it is released, go and get it.

Parallels just got updated to v3 (edit its still in beta), now has gpu acceleration, that should give you the best of both worlds.
I also predict that apple will release something this year... maybe on a tuesday or sunday just to freak people out.
If any past wwdc's are to go by, the focus will be on software and OSX, I expect the same this year. The focus will be on 10.5. There will be maybe one new product, maybe iMac update or new cinema displays, but no more than that... nothing huge hardware wise anyways. The iphone will have its own day on the 29th, the new mbp will probably have their own day too, and led screen isn't a huge deal, thus not something apple is gonna waste time at wwdc over. Thats my two cents.

Next Monday seems more reasonable, given that it's the first day of WWDC, and Jobs will likely introduce it in his keynote, along with the move to LED screens and OS 10.5.

Why can't they just put 256MB in all of them?

I would think 256MB and 512MB on that 8600M GT, but you know, I think it will come out at WWDC. A major update like this will probably come at a Jobsnote.

If Dell can fit a GF 8400 into the 13 inch ultraportable notebook I dont see why Apple cant.

apple's 13 inch line isnt targeted toward that market. this is a case of "if you dont understand it, it isnt for you"

they want to differentiate their pro line from their regular line in as many ways as possible- price and graphics card are good ways to start.

The MacBook is hot enough as is; if they put an 8400M into it, it would spontaneously combust.

And, like the above poster said, the MacBook isn't aimed at that market.

It would be great to see a ~12" MBP. Probably won't happen though.

Thats something that would DEFINITELY need a Jobsnote to cover.

And yes, it would be great to see something smaller than the MacBook in Apple's lineup.
