Does it matter whether I install my 4gb RAM upgrade before firing up the machine for the first time or should I do the initial start-up with the factory 2gb RAM.

It doesn't matter, as far as I know...but I'd do all the setting up first before changing the RAM, as I'd be excited to try it out :p.

I'd try it out first to see if there are any problems. If there are, then it's best to get it replaced by Apple etc. Once things have settled (and you've calmed down from the excitement, which takes a (long while)), go get yourself the RAM.

I think this is also useful to determine IF you need the extra RAM. I just got myself the MBP and will fiddle with the machine for a while first before deciding if the extra RAM is necessary.

it won't be a problem either way, as the process is very simple and easy, and only takes a few minutes.

but it can't hurt to fire it up and make sure everything is working correctly. It is unlikely but there is always a chance that a stick of RAM may be DOA so I would definitely fire it up right out of the box to make sure everything is working properly.

and like others have mentioned, you probably won't be able to resist anyway.

I totally agree with Technospaz and circa86 here, try it first as it arrives originally to see if everything works the way it should. After that you can change the memory it's only a 2 minute job.

Agreed with the rest of you. Definitely try things out as they are before putting in new RAM.

I put my 4Gb RAM straight into mine before firing it up, but I have to admit I was literally shaking with excitment so found it a bit tricky
