    Hi folks,

Thought a thread on how to get the most out of the new MBP's 9600m would be great (at least for me), particularly under Windows.

I was pleasantly surprised to see my MBP 2.4 256mb model get a 3dmark06 score of 5850 at the demo default of 1280x800 (edited to correct res) on a fresh XP SP2 install with the Leopard drivers. For example, Far Cry 2 complained about old drivers, but still runs well at 1280x800 medium to high settings (30fps from a quick look). That was from just a quick play with settings.

I tried the Dox Custom Forceware 180.44 from laptopvideo2go.com and 3dmark06 dropped back to 5540 and my games started to stutter a bit.

Anyone else have better scores? Can this card be safely overclocked? Are there advantages to using it under Vista with memory sharing? When will we be able to use the 9400m+9600m in SLI under Windows (Nvidia said it's possible on the hardware level).

    Cheers.
    B

I wouldn't OC it in the MBP as it has poor cooling. It's aluminum shell helps dissipate heat at the negative impact of getting hot.

Since it helps dissipate heat, it's conductive, therefore it is hot. If the shell wasn't dissipating internal heat, it'd be ice cold.

Think of it this way - the best thermos in the world wouldn't be warm.

Yeah but it won't get as hotas the gpu itself and start to hurt your hand. would it?

If a surface feels hot, it's radiating heat rather than containing it (containing the heat just hides the problem). A laptop that feels cool doesn't necessarily mean it has a good cooling system. A much better indication of the effectiveness of a cooling system is to measure the temperature of the cpu/gpu die.

you should clarify what resolution you used because it changes things a lot, did you do the test on the MBP screen or hook up an external because there is no way you could of done the standard 1280x1024 test if you were using the MBP screen. if you dont have an external monitor try 1440x900 resolution because it is quite comparable to 1280x1024, about a 3% difference or something, although you cant do 1440x900 res's with the demo version of 3dmark06 (i think).

Basically, would you rather have your GPU hot or your case hot? If the case is hot, that means the cooling system is working as it's supposed to.

Can we talk less about heat dynamics and more about practical overclocking and temperatures that arise in practice, rather than in theory :)

Hi, i know this is about the 9600, but... i've got the latest of the old model.

i started using nTune because AtiTool is not compatible with my drivers/ Vista 32, and i don't understand riva. nTune puts my stock speeds at 375 core/ 502 memory, which can't be right because i think i read for this computer they were 400/ 600 ish.
Does anyone know the real figures, and if the 180.43 drivers are worth it? I still only get about 20 fps on crysis warhead at 420 / 600 and about 25 fps at 520/ 750 overlclock all at mainstream at 1280 x 800. Is it wishful thinking to expect more than that with this machine? Far cry 2 is 24 fps at 1440 x 900 all medium.
Any tips on how to get my core speeds back, because ntune has stuck them at that very low setting.

Also, has anyone else with this same set up found a comfortable overlock that gives a significant boost with comfortable temperatures (for a macbook pro at least).

new macbook pros are cooler,so they can be OC'ed(like older ones, but they got hell hot!).use on one of our OC'ing guides and try yourself!and always test after OC'ing!

    Hi all-

I'm running a 2008 2.4 ghz unibody mbp. I upgraded to 4 gb RAM. I'm running vista x64 in boot camp for gaming. I've tried installing ntune, but everytime I try to accept the Eula under the "Performance" tab of the nvidia system tools, my machine crashes into blue screen memory dumpage. I installed the snow leopard drivers from the install disk, but upgraded the 9600 driver to the most recent nvidia certified driver (186.XX, I think). Has anyone had success using ntune in boot camp since installing snow leopard? If so, did you have to edit any permissions? Note, I sucessfully installed ntunes 5.38 (which only allows gpu overclocking, but not CPU overclocking). It's 5.45 that's causing crashes (although 5.38 crashed a few times, as well...until I installed an nvidia certified driver). I would greatly appreciate any advice.

    -Vijay

Sorry, my previous response was unclear....if possible, I'd love to hear from someone who's successfully installed Ntune in Vista x64 with a 9600m gt.

why do you want to install Ntune when it has been replaced by the newer nvidia system tools which runs fine on my w7 rtm and rc...

    A. I'm currently running Vista
    B. Does system tools permit CPU overclocking? I installed it last night and only saw options for GPU ovrclck.

Ok, my bad. I just took a look through the System tools manual and noticed that it enables cpu overclocking. I must have d/ed the wrong version or screwed up the install. Anyone know whether this will run in Vista?

I've tried to oc my macbook pro (9600m gt 256mb) with core 625, memory 910 and shader 1475 and scored 7105 in 3dmark06. The temp is in the range of 76 to 84 celsius. Is that good? (I'm running windows 7 64bit professional)

Yes, these are gaming temps. The temp actually rises up to 88 within the first 4 mins of the game but when the fan starts to spin at high speed it's stabilized around 77 to 84.
