i'm in the process of purchasing a MBP and i was wondering if upgrading a 1gb ram to 3gb ram for 250$can is reasonably priced. This is offered by a local mac specialised store. worth it?
    thanks,
    p.h.

I'd just upgrade to 2GB. 3GB is overkill.
I can only see that being useful if you do a lot of A/V work. Otherwise.. probably little use at all.

I'd recommend. DIY. But I don't know how expensive it is to get ram there. In the US, we can get 2 x1 gb sticks for the MBP for around $160 US. Hard to say if $250 can is a good deal or now :-/

Yeah, these questions are useless without knowing how you intend to use the computer.

To answer the question you asked - that is a good price for an upgrade from 1gb to 3gb.

The question you are not asking - should you upgrade to 3gb is a choice based on your need. 2gb is the sweet spot of price performance on intel Mac's. Most folks will be happy with that. If you do heavy A/V work, or run multiple OS's or just run a lot of RAM hungry programs then 3gb can be well worth the cost but we'd need to know more to help you with advice like that.

    Hope this helps

You might want to invest in 3gb of ram if you are planning on running Parallels quite often. Parallels will suck up 512MB-1GB of RAM, so running on a 2GB machine will leave you with only 1GB for OSX. Constantly switching back and forth between OSs will be hard on the virtual disk.

Other than that, 2GB is just right. Not too expensive, but still worth the money for an upgrade.

    250 CAD = 225 USD
You can right now get a 1GB stick for about $60-70 USD.
You will be paying another $150-160 for the 3rd GB.

Options: 1.Get the additional 2GB stick now.
2.Get an additional 1GB stick now.
3.Buy nothing now, wait another year till prices drop on 2GB sticks.

I think that is a very reasonable price.

The benches didn't show much of a difference between the 3GB and 2GB in different programs and games in Mac OS X.
Still, it's your own choice, you can go with the 3GB.But waiting might be a better idea ?
