Hi, everyone! I just got a MacBook Pro 13 in and noticed that when I'm using it but then get up to move somewhere else, it makes a clicking sound as I lift up from my lap. Is this normal? Maybe the hard drive is preparing to move or something? I have no idea.

if you move it too fast.. the motion sensor will detect this and quickly park the hard drive heads to prevent damage... it will make a click when doing this... its to protect your hard drive from being moved too suddenly.

Yes, you only need to worry if the clicking sound is constant and periodic.

I too, was hearing an odd noise when moving/tilting my 15" i5 Macbook Pro...though it wasn't a "clicking noise"...it was more of an electrical sound. But the sound would occur exactly as yours does, when the laptop is moved or titled in any direction (when stationary the sound does not happen, and when the laptop is powered off it makes no noise).

My original thread is below, do you guys think the electrical/lightsaber sound is this hard drive "motion sensor" or something else (I never heard a clicking noise)?

is it like a grinding machine? That's the sound my superdrive player makes when it is reading discs and i'm tilting it. may be that's it. If it's coming from your hdd, then that's definitely a problem. If it's still under apple care, they will replace it free of charge.

It did not sound like a grinding machine. My sound was way more subtle and nuanced and sounded electrical in nature.

No clicking or grinding, just a short, low-pitched "ZZZzzzzz" sound.

In fact, I'd imagine most others may never notice but I'm very observant....and every notebook I've ever used was totally silent when being adjusted or moved or tilted.

The sound was definitely originating from underneath the keyboard and I couldn't pinpoint if it was coming from the left or right side....but I'd say it was more center-right.

    What do you guys think?

Yes it happens with mine as well...

Make sure after you close the computer's lid, wait until the little light in the front starts pulsating before moving it.

When the light is on the HDD is still spinning so when you move it the sensor parks the head.

It happened to me on my old 2008 MBP as well.

Then why have a laptop? LOL. I am constantly getting up, sitting down, moving from room to room, readjusting my seating position, etc. And with each jostle or tilt or movement I can hear the short "ZZZzzzz" sound.

Bottom line though, you're essentially saying there's nothing wrong? And this sound is not something to be concerned over?

    It's by design?

    Can someone else confirm this?

Yes it is the sudden movement sensor that all MBPs come with. It is by design.

Regardless, if it's a laptop or not you shouldn't move a computer when the hard drive is spinning. Luckily for you the motion sensor is working and preventing you from damaging your hard drive / loosing data. It's another reason why SSDs are so nice.
