    Hey,

I am going to buying one of these in Canada and will take the basic 2.8ghz model with no upgrades. I would however like to get 8gb of ram because I will be doing lots of multi-tasking and some 3d work in windows. Obviously I will not pay apple's crazy prices. I know you can buy "generic" ram for the laptop and was wondering if you guys know what ram I can use and if you know of any good deals? If I sell the mac ram and only user "generic" ram will my warranty be voided?

    Thanks :)

Get crucial. I wouldn't bother selling your RAM, if your notebook comes with 2gb you will have a hard time selling it and won't get much for it. Any notebook that supports DDR3 will already have at least 2gb. You are better off keeping it for back up or returning the notebook if something happens.

Like Seshan said, I'd really go name brand when it comes to such an important part of your computer like RAM. Beware, 4GB sticks are EXPENSIVE.

Here's a link to the RAM I would choose if I was in the market for 8GB.

    Crucial RAM

Um I'm going to have to disagree with the brand of ram.

Brand of ram doesn't really matter as almost all brands are really good.

OCZ, GSkill, Patriot, Mushkin, Crucial, Corsair, Kingston. There is a multitude of ram brands and nearly all of them are as good as any other.

4gb sticks of ddr3 is OBSCENELY expensive, but if you have the money to burn, buy it from Newegg or a reputable reseller. Do not buy it from the manufacturer directly as you are going to pay for MSRP and then some.

DDR3 SODIMM laptop memory is what you need. It will fit. Your warranty will not be voided. Selling your 2gb DDR3 is going to be hard as mentioned above and expect to pay around $600 for 8gb DDR3

Why not get a 4GB kit (2x2GB) from crucial? That should be plenty for your needs for quite awhile.

The 2.8ghz macbook pro already comes with 4gb made up of 2x2GB sticks. So its not really a priority to upgrade to 8gb. Would have given me better performance in a couple of programs but that performance is not worth $900!

I'm just gonna toss it out there - I seriously doubt that any programs you use would see a benefit from 8GB of ram. Most applications are targeted to use much less.

Yes pretty much all RAM is good, but some different ones have problems with the MBP's. Crucial is one that will most likely not have a problem.

Im pretty sure Maya + 3ds max will make full use of the 8gb. I have a pc with 4gb of ram and as far as I can tell it is the bottleneck.

It's called "future proofing", which the MBP is thankfully. ;) One day 8GB will be needed, and I'll bet that many that buy their MBP today will still have it then. :D

This is why you get a desktop.

Don't get me wrong. Laptops have gotten so powerful ever since the Mobile version of Conroe was released, but it will never be as powerful as a desktop.

Never say never. :) Laptop market share continues to increase year after year. Eventually they will out-sell desktops (I believe they already do by a small margin). Intel has been doing great with creating powerful, yet efficient processors. As time goes on, they will only get smaller, and more powerful, while producing less heat and consuming less energy.
I think notebooks are the future. With our culture becoming more and more mobile and always on the go, I think eventually desktops will become obsolete.
Especially with companies like Clevo/Sager, always pushing the envelope with notebooks, for the first time ever, laptops are just about as powerful as desktops. That gap will only continue to get shorter in the future I believe.

Laptops may outsell desktops because the majority of consumers don't need such power, but until they can fit a super computer into a laptop, I won't be ditching my Desktop.

I use a Dual Quad Xeon Mac Pro at work with 10 gigs of ram and I consider this to be a bare minimum when it comes to doing video. I'm not saying laptops wont ever reach that power, but its going to be a long time and not only that Desktops will always be one step ahead.

If you are doing high end 3d rendering, you would benefit form getting a mac pro and stuffing it with 24GB of RAM. Sure your Macbook Pro can do it but it won't be as upgradeable or powerful as a loaded mac pro.

Sorry to be just repeating what everyone else is saying :) 3D apps gobble ram and this is where the mac pro would shine and be a powerhouse for you.

This is my first notebook (yay!) but there is a reason I'm getting one. I have considered upgrading my desktop with 16gb of ram and a quad core etc but carrying my pc around has become too much of a hassle. I move between two homes very often so currently I have to either carry my desktop around or not have a pc at one of the homes. I could buy another desktop I guess but its hard to sync the two computers online because of South Africa's crappy internet. We pay $12.5/GB of data (and thats without line rental of $62). So it becomes very expensive to backup to a remote location. So I thought the best option would be a notebook.
