Will the MBA 45w ac adapter work on my MBP 13.3"? Will it damage it? The box said it is only for a MBA but the connector is identical and in my experience with ThinkPads, those adapters were compatible except the higher end machines wouldn't charge with a smaller ac adapter.

My MBP is pretty basic so I was hoping it would charge with the smaller adapter.

The MBP 13 requires a 65 watt adapter. The 45 watt Air adapter will work, but probably won't charge the battery while the laptop is running.

EDIT: Won't work, as you stated below, the Air adapter has a different voltage(14.5v vs 16.5v).

Does the MBP recognized it is a 45W adapter if you plug it in? If it doesn't, assume the laptop will try to draw up to 65W of power. That'll burn out the 45W pretty quickly, and is very unsafe for the adapter and laptop.

Get a 65W adapter and play it safe.

It's not that I don't have a 60w, rather I just bought myself a MBA for work. I carry both laptops around since one is for work and one for personal use. Just seems silly to be stuck with 2 different AC adapters when I travel. With my Lenovo laptops, I just used a single 90w for both my personal X220 and my work W520.

I would then actually try to find out if the MBP is aware of the 45W adapter instead of 65W.

You can do the same thing with your Macbook's, just bring the 60 watt adapter.

That'll work perfectly. Double check to make sure the voltage output from the transformer is the same (really applies either way with the 45W or 60W adapter)...I imagine it would be fine since it is all from the same vendor but it should be checked.

Does an 85W charger for a 15" MBP work?

It's alright if you use an adapter that is rated for a higher amperage, but if the voltage is different you need to ask Apple if it is okay. The MBA might be designed to take 14.5V and 16.5V inputs.

Thanks for the info. I'll check with the Apple guys later today on my lunch.

I believe the MBP 15 and 17 use the same 85W charger.

Well, according to Apple Support, a higher wattage one won't hurt it.

So even with the higher voltage on the 60w adapter, it should be OK on the MBA. Time to buy a couple spare 60w adapters.

85w would also work in the MBA

I meant for a 13" MBP. The post above me answered my question :D
