    According to Apple's FAQ page on the subject;

    Does Apple mean the specific "model", or do they mean the generation, or do they mean the actual individual computer?

    In other words, would a drive that was shipped with a 2010 MBA 13" be usable on the same generation MBA 11"?

    I see the drives on ebay, and wonder if a "spare" would work for mine. I would prefer not to be buying an expensive neck amulet, as I understand that they are "read -only". LOL

    So, a if that is the case, a drive that accompanies a current 13" MBA is worthless for a current 11" MBA?

    People selling these drives on ebay are not specifying the model. Hmmm.

    I think you're misreading. Apple means you cannot use the software from your macbook air to install on other any other machine except the one the software came with.

    seems to have been interpreted as

    "Can I use the MacBook Air Software to install software on other Macs?"

    You can use any DVD drive you wish to install software. Heck, I have an LG external drive I picked up for $30 I use for my air. Have not had any issues with it reading anything, including the OS discs.
