    Hi all,

I got a lot of advice from you, last October, when I started thinking about getting an Apple MB (and switching away from windows). Eventually, I decided to do so -- but to wait until Apple adopts the Core 2 Duo processor. Since then, I had to wait a bit longer, as I was occupied with other work.

Well, finally, it is time to make the move! :) So, next week, I am buying

a white 2GHz C2D MB, with its ram upgrated to 2GB.

Since I have an educational discount, at the Apple Store, the total cost will be $1356 + tax = $1450. (This also includes a free $100 printer, which I do not realy want -- hopefully, I will sell it.)

Here, I wish to ask whether you can offer me any buying tip. ;)

In particular, I wonder whether it would be considerably cheaper / better to get it from amazon.com, without the ram upgrade, for $1224 (after rebate, since there is no tax), and upgrade the ram myself.

[In this case, I will be left with the two rather useless 512MB chips of the original ram.]

Any other buying tip / suggestion?

Thank you for all your help. It has been great to read all your comments!!!

    G - Nosferatu.

Buy from apple, services and warranty covers the additional cost. Anyway you will be wasting the ram chips if u upgrade yourself, the apple macbook is customizable. Hope i helped.

wait, if you buy from amazon you don't get the 1 year warranty? i thought buying from any certified apple reseller gives you the 1 year warranty (and option for applecare) as well. does anybody know?

I had the same ideas as you a few weeks ago when I purchased my mb with 2gb of ram. In the end went with the apple store, I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of trying to get rid of two sticks of ram and the all the rest. The apple online store is super easy and the upgrade price was reasonable.
The only thing I would suggest is getting the mini-to vga/dvi adaptors. I didn't get the applecare, will wait until the end of the first year to get that. The only other thing I bought was a laptop sleeve which might be another thing to pickup.

What will the mini-to vga/dvi adaptors be useful for? Perhaps a very basic question, but I am not the most technology friendly person... :)

Myself, as well, I am planning to do the same, especially because I do not know in which country I will be living next winter. (Applecare does not apply internationally.) A buying tip: Buy applecare from ebay, you can get it for arounf $120.

    Any suggestion about laptop sleeves?

There is an advantage to buying RAM yourself, backup. If a problem arises it is always nice to have extra parts around for diagnosing. As for sleeves, I really like the Crumpler School Hymn.

The mini dvi to dvi/vga adaptor is good if you plan on outputing to another montitor or projector. For me its a must have as I run my laptop thru projectors for seminars etc on the odd occassion. But it may not be something you need.
