Guys I have some questions. I am considering a MB.

The thing is I have a special going on from my school..

    1) MB with 2.16mhz intel core 2 duo, 2 gigs of RAM --- $1,000
    2) MB 2.0 ghz 1 gig of RAM ---$1,000

These are the only difference b/w the 2 choice are the processor. So the question is, why is the faster processor with more RAM cheaper? Choice 1) is on "clearance" from the school. Problem is I don't see a 2.16 ghz offered anywhere else. Most are 2.0 or 2.2

So is choice one an older core or something? Any benefits of one over the other? Any suggestions and/or comments?

Also I have a Media Server that runs WinXP Pro that stores my movies, music and photos. Will I be able to access it and watch the movies and listen to the music with the Mac? Thanks in advance.

The first one is an older Merom age Core 2 Duo while the second is the newer Santa Rosa refresh.

The 2.16GHz version from your options will have a dvd burner, but the older intel gma 950 integrated video card. The newer 2.0GHz model has the intel gma x3100 integrated vid card, which is a lot better than the 950, I think it scores twice as much on video benchmarks (still crap for gaming though), but it does not have a dvd burner, just a cd burner.

If I were you, I'd get the older model, chances are if you are thinking of getting a macbook you don't game a lot, and gma 950 is good enough for anything but gaming. You will get a dvd burner, twice the ram, and a bit better processor.

    Hope that helps.

Yep, 2.0GHz model doesnt have a DVD burner, however the 2.2 GHz one does. If you really need to burn DVDs either get choice 1 or get a 2.2GHz current model. If you don't need DVD burning capabilities, get choice 2.

    EveryMac.com
EveryMac.com is the complete guide to every Macintosh, iPod, and Mac clone in the world, with technical, configuration, and pricing details.

Helpful resource for specific information about different models.

Yes, you will be able to access the server. Should be automatically recognized and appear in the sidebar in Leopard. Otherwise you can connect manually in Finder: Go > Connect to Server.

cool thanks guys. Yea you are right about the DVD-Burner.

Actually I am getting this computer for my Mom as her first computer... She will not be gaming but will be watching 1080p movies on it. Would this pose any sort of problem? Also would it be possible to connect this through DVI to an HDTV projector (option 1 with the weaker video card)?

Also, is it still true that I would not need to install an antivirus on a mac nor a firewall of some kind. Iknow I have Norton AV and firewall on all of my pc machines. Thanks.

Why dont you go for the 2.2 ghz. Faster speed can never hurt and since your probably not gonna buy another laptop for a while get something better.

Go with the 2nd option so you can utilize 4GB vs 3GB. 0.16 Ghz isn't much and RAM is getting cheaper. Also you'll have slightly better graphics.

You shouldn't have a problem with 1080p movies, I remember watching trailers from apple in that rez without problems, you should know though, that the macbook's max rez is 1280x800, so technically 720p is best suited for macbook, and should also be easier for the processor to uh... process.

And if you plan to connect to a hidef tv through dvi, just get a mini-dvi (macbook's standard video out port) to dvi cable, which apple sells for $19.
