How many times average a year is the MB/MBP sent in for repairs?
Awkward question and difficult to quantify, but I need to know cause I'm buying a MBP and will have it with me abroad for a year and I'm still worried of its reliability

I've had a MBP for a little over a year and it's never been in for any sort of repair. The MB I had previously, though, was another story. Not up to Apple's usual standards, IMHO, but I do realize most other folks have had much better luck with their own MB's. I don't think you should worry too much about the reliability (in general) of either machine.

product defects or manufacturing defects nowdays is quite common, as things get more and more complex, and nowdays technology progress too rapidly that they are preassured to come up with new stuff without properly testing the technology. however they could do more on quality testing front, although it is difficult also, again; as things are getting more and more complex.

the good news is; if you can't find fault of when using the machine for more than a week or two, there is a good chance that you are free of manufacturing defect, and if your machine can clear the one year mark without any problem, then your machine will be reliable.

my macbook coreduo goes one repair for crooked keys once, then after getting a replacement top case (they had to replace the entire top case coz the keyboard is built in), then there is the faulty fan which is replaced twice.. then there is the occasional buzzing the notebbok's been having.

my macbook pro core2duo have problem with faulty power supply, the powerbrick and the computer is ticking like an old mechanical clock. the screen also has this flickering white lines.

they replaced that; the second replacement got a noisy buzzing/hissing/crackling/beeping, magsafe power brick, and the display right latch isn't latching and retracting properly, the eject key is croocked.

they replaced that again, now its the third one, been pretty good so far... the F3 AND F12 keys dont feel quite right.. its a bit noisy, but if i take it in; they probably says it is within spec, i dont think it is worth the hassle, as the wear and tear involved is greater than just live on with it.

this fault is spooted on the first day of having the computer, so it could be considered as manufacturing defects. i'm pretty vugiulant with this kind of stuff, so... average people might not notice it....

of course things in dell front arent too good also, i had problem with HDD failure, disc not ejecting.

at least with apple, you've got international warranty dont you?

Yep. It is international warranty. I had problems with my memory modules and i got them serviced in France under warranty. (Notebook was bought in US). All they need is your serial number.

Ok, so the word thus far is Apple’s reliability is pretty much in-line with the rest of the pc market. That really is good to hear, now that I am considering to purchase a new laptop in the next month or two.

Anyone heard of any new rumors on what’s in store for upcoming MB or MBP upgrades and when?

Worth mentioning that Apple's customer support is constantly ranked as the best in the industry :). And most people will agree with that, Apple really has great customer support.

The MBP will most likely be updated early next year with the release of Penryn in early 2008 (possibly in January). The MacBook, hard to say.

I've had my MBP for a little over 3 months. The keyboard + touchpad died which really sucked as I had a bunch of papers due for college. However I did get my MBP back the day after it was shipped off for repairs :).

Sam, Everyone that I know who owns an Apple product, has nothing but good things to say about their support. Now Dell on the other hand is a whole different story and one of the main reasons of why I am "Mac'ing" the switch!

I just hope Apple will release the update early January (before the beginning of next semester!).

why do you want an update? the next update will be very minimal and you have to wait longer till they figure out/clear the bugs/issue that is usually inheritant with every new product.

currently there is not much/serious flaw with the current MBP.

of course there will always be issue/s and the continually gonna fix it, on the other hand, they gonna invent new issue along the way, and you never buy a computer. with that in mind. currently is a good time. a bad time is when you buy the first generation MB/MBP at their early launch. now thats a DO NOT BUY situation! :)
