First off I am extremely sorry for posting about a desktop on these forums but this is the only community I know and can get a response from.

I am leaving town for 6 weeks and giving my desktop to a friend to hold onto while I am gone from the dorms. I don't trust the dorms with this computer. She is going to just be keeping the desktop in her room packed up in the box. Is it safe to do this? Will the internal battery die over those 6 weeks and not being plugged in? I just want to make sure that it's kept safely in every sense possible.

    Thanks guys and sorry again!

Considering it probably sits for months waiting for you to buy it will probably be fine. What's the worst that could happen?, you replace the little battery if it actually does die.

1)The battery is just a timekeeper inside the motherboard when the Desktop is turned off.
2)6 Months is not enough to drain the silver button battery you need a year or 2.
3)The battery should also cost less than a dollar it should be self replaceable unless your Mac Pro use some sort of exotic battery.

    Your good to go.

as for the RTC/EEPROM battery, those are normally good for 2-5 years at a time ( often more ). they have about the same draw as your average digital watch.

Thank you very much folks. I appreciate your quick responses. Now I am comfortable with leaving it with a friend (insured too).
