Was just checking the store, and the base model mbp is only 100$ off, down to 1899. and the second level mbp is 2299$, down 200$. so no more 200$ off all pro models. oh, and the base mb is now only 50$ off, havent checked the others.

Only $50 here in Australia now. Apple hates students.

I was highly considering buying a MacBook for school after this update, but due to the cut in student discount and other things in this update, I am now driven away from Apple. I was hoping to start to "learn" OS X (I'm part of an IT program), but not anymore. Little disappointed now.

Pretty disappointed with the reduction in student discount. I had always planned to get the mid-range Macbook, so it's really only a $50 difference, but for what? The features I wanted on the base model (now $950) are the SuperDrive and bigger hard drive, and it now has that, AND a faster processor. They really screwed up by giving the $1299 MB a slower processor.

I don't mean to come across as flat out heartless but there ARE other people that need discounts besides students for goodness sake. My company discount used to be 8%, now it's only 6%. I need an Apple notebook for work and I have financial responsibilities and living expenses. Students aren't the only ones who need a price break thank you.

Also I beg to differ that a student needs a MacBook Pro, the Macbook is perfectly fine, even the $999.00 model.

For $999? Is Apple insane or retarded?

I have to disagree with you there. If you're in any sort of production program, the Macbook has not been enough. Editing in FCP and Pro Tools on a base Macbook is slow. Just because I'm a student doesn't mean I shouldn't have options to suit my needs. Cutting the education discount is indefensibly greedy.

Yes, that's a ridiculous price for those specs. Apple is not going to win any new customers with that crap, unless they're lemmings. They should be pushing to RAISE the bar like they used to, not lower it and dress it up in an apple logo.

HLdan, I've agreed with you on people mindlessly bashing Apple, but Lithus makes a valid point. That baseline $1000 is a complete rip-off, and I'm obviously an Apple fan. I'd never let any of my family members or friends pay that much for that.

I'll still get a $160 (on the base model, more for the higher-end model) government discount through my dad :p.

Sorry, mistake on my part not being very clear. (please disregard the mirror remark). My point was most students want a Macbook pro although to get through school the Macbook for $999 is perfectly sufficient. I too am quite disappointed that Apple couldn't price the now older Macbook at $899 because that's all it's worth, honestly, if not less. They are being greedy. Normally I would agree with you that the a production student would need FCP and the MBP would be the solution however in my experience on this forum, most of the students here only want a MBP to play Crisis and any other game. They have been very vocal about getting a MBP because the Macbook has an integrated GPU and you can't play intense 3D games on it.

I hardly ever see students on here mention that they need a MBP for anything else other than gaming.

very well put on all aspects, especially about the people on here discussing the MBP, they do not understand that it is not really made to be a gaming machine.

I do however use my MBP, as a student, for projects that require this type of machine. could I use a awesome workstation graphics card in my MBP? absolutely, but i really don't want to pay $2500 for a GPU either so, I am actually capable of understanding what is reasonable and adapt it to make my ideas work. I am smart enough to adapt to what I like and what is out there.

reasonable they they changed the student discout, it is still a great deal, any discount on these machines is a good one, it is just something you can't get from another company at all.

For me, a student, yes. That also combined with the increased cost of the Macbook (yes I realize that there is still a plastic one for $1000 but I'd get/want the Aluminum).

for what its worth, i called my local apple store and they quoted me a price of 1909.89 (hooray for chicago's 10.25% sales tax) for a new 2.4ghz model mbp, indicating a $200.00 education discount. maybe the news hasn't trickled down to the sales associates, but at least some hope?

^^I thought it was always $100 off for educational discount? I'm going down to my local apple store to get in on the discount before they start catching on.

Sorry for bringing up this old thread, but I just wanted to say that when I was buying my MBP (base model) today at the apple store (retail) the guy gave me $200 off instead of $100. Of course I didn't say anything. Oh this is in Canada (Ontario). So maybe try buying your MB/MBP at the retail store instead of online?

Um, that is half of the original discount, so yes, it is a lot.
