Does anyone know if the Core Due or Core2Duo versions of the MacBook run Linux? ie are all the drivers available and proven to work if for example you wanted to run a dual book or run Lnux as the primary OS on the laptop? Thanks

In a word, yes. This link seems to be a good example.

I run Fedora Core 6 under Parallels on my MacBook with no issues. We easy to set up except video resolution tweaking.

I run OS X as the primary OS on my MacBook. Using a program called PArallels (see parallels.com) I have installed two additional OS's (Win XP and Fedora Core 6) in Virtual Machines under Parallels.

These OS's run in virtual machines within Parallels giving me access to those OS's and thier programs without leaving OS X (they run in windows under OS X like any other application). The OS's think they are running on thier own machine (although its a virtual machine).

Installing Windows XP was dead easy, just give Parallels the key and put in the XP disk and it does it all. With Fedora, I just asked Parallels to install a new OS, specified Linux, Fedora, inserted the Fedora disks and went through a normal Fedora install.

The only issue I had was Fedora kept opening a 1600x1200 window which is bigger than my MacBook screen and when I reset the resolution within Gnome, X-windows would crash. I went out to command line and changed the resolution there, restarted x-windows and everything was fine.

    Hope this helps

I'm looking to install Fedora on parallels but I'm a complete noob to Red Hat and Linux. Could you explain how you fixed this issue in detail because it looks like it would bother me opening a 1600x1200 window everytime.

    Thanks in advance.

Its actually really simple once you know how ;-)

If you are in Gnome just open a console window and type "system-config-display", select the standard VESA compliant driver (likely the one alread chosen) and set your resolution to something that fits on your MacBook screen (800x600 if you want to run in a window, or larger if you run full screen). Then log out and log back in again. Voila, fixed

If you did not make it into x-windows, login to your root account and type the same command. Do the same stuff. Restart x-windows or just shut down and restart your VM)

I would highly recomend this months issue of Linux Format Special magazine if you want to learn a lot fast. It includes the FC6 install CD;s and gives you solutions to a LOT of the common issues you might encounter as well as an overview of popular Linux Software. Its $19 at Borders or other good magazine stores.

I think I'll go and do that. By this months issue you mean January or February?

I could not tell as there was a sticker over the place it would say (cause its a limey mag and borders converted pounds to dollars i'm sure).

You can't miss the cover though, its mostly blue with large white lettering and has "FEDORA CORE 6 LINUX" all over it.

Another thumbs up for LXF, it's one of the two magazines I pick up each month since I weaned myself off my tech/PC magazine habit. Worth it for the coverdisc alone...
