Is it normal for my MBP to be sluggish when I am transferring large files to my external via firewire?

simply put, its going to be slow because your system is busy reading from the HDD to transmit the data to your external drive... while at the same time you are interrupting that process to use your system to perhaps read/write elsewhere to the same HDD. your drives read/write heads are probably flying all over the place trying to keep up with the tasks your throwing at it while its still trying to do the copy.
