I just bought an LG monitor to attach to my new Macbook. The problem is when I turn on the LG monitor my desktop background appears on the screen (by that i mean the picture) but none of my icons show up. What am I doing wrong?

You've set your external monitor as an extension to your Macbook monitor. Press F7 and things will change. Alternatively, you can open up System Preferences>Displays for some more advanced options.

if that didn't work, you could always go into display options, and turn Mirroring on.
