This ones straight from the horses mouth.
Looks like apple is planing to introduce LED based macs very soon. Reading between the lines this is likely to be only on laptops at this stage as iMac's screen cinema displays are likely to be too large to successfully upgrade them now.
Also on the up is that apple is making moves to improve its green appeal, which is great news for everyone, not just apple buyers.

Hopefully they'll be ready in time for the SR refresh.

I think its a cool decision by Apple...but will the price rise because of the more brighter and less power consuming LEDs? As if people haven't complained enough over pricey Macs already...

I think they will be more expensive at first because it's a newer technology. The article did mention that it will be more affordable as it becomes more mainstream and other companies use the technology. It shouldn't take long for that to happen. :)

I doubt it will really be much more expensive if at all. Apple has generally stayed pretty consistent with their prices over the years and model changes. I think especially on the Macbook Pro, they have a little bit of "wiggle room" on the price considering the premium you pay for it already.

I dont think there will be a price hike for the LED lighting, for the other features soon to come out i'm not too sure. Normally Apple seems to keep prices the same when new features or products come out. Rather than make more money it seems they are more worried about market share. It seems they would rather add quality to the products at the same price rather than risk other companies using the technology to cannabalize their market share.

Given the rash of recent santa rosa notebooks from many of the larger player HP, dell etc, I expect that apple will not be far behind with there refresh of the mbp. My guess is that it will be these that will first receive the refresh and the led screens. The mb will follow later by 2-3 months possibly with the much rumoured 15" macbook.

well this was quite expected as the ipods already use this technology
led backlights are very efficient and help increase battery life reasonably
talking of reasonable lets just hope apples prices remain that way too and dont turn into over priced computers unaffordable to normal people

I would really like them to replace the 13inch with 14 inch macbook. Which will then give them some nice room to then create an ultra portable laptop at around 12 inches.

To me the weight is more important, and given the size of the bezel on the mb, I think there is plenty of room left to work with to make a very slim and light weight mpb 12" coming in at around 1.5kg. this would be sufficiently smaller from the 13.3" mb, and would be my next purchase!

Yes, I'd also heard that an LED-based screen would need far less bezel width, requiring only 1-2mm of thickness.
