I just bought a new 15 inch MBP (2.2G, 128Mb VRAM), and one of the packaging stickers said that the backlight contains mercury. Did the other buyers today notice this sticker? I thought the new LED backlights weren't supposed to have mercury, and that was why they are better for the environment. Anyone care to comment?

That's interesting. According to this Apple Press Release the new 15" MacBook Pro should be "mercury-free". Will you post an image of the sticker?

I'd prefer to buy a product that wasn't detrimental to the environment. Although, to be honest, this is not my primary concern. However, and more so, I'd appreciate a company being honest to the end consumer. So, if there is still Mercury in the 15" MacBook Pro, I expect exposure and a proper explanation from Apple and Steve Jobs!

I don't know how to upload a picture, where is the button/option?? It only gives an option to show a URL of an image.

I don't mean to insinuate or accuse you of misreading the MBP packing but it's a bit weird for Apple to note on their website that their latest notebook has a mercury free LCD and then place a sticker on the MBP box that the screen contains mercury. Please post a pic.

    Click on the "Go Advanced"
But I don't really think that Apple is afraid of using such a thing. They seem to really like their position as the least environment friendly electronics company.

I'm sorry, I don't know where "go advanced" is. I tried uploading the pic to my avatar, but that's not detailed enough.

Potentially, this is a sticker that was on the previous generation of MacBook Pros, and they for got to not include it for the new 15" models? They made a pretty big deal about the LED backlights specifically not having mercury in them.

Is there a date on the paper or something so that you can prove it was suppost to ship with your new MBP?

Why can't you just take his word that it came with his new MBP? It maybe that its obsolete packaging but more likely Apple is still making the transition to the mercury free LCDs.

Well, see that's the problem. I paid for a mercury free LCD screen. If this screen is not as advertised, then I want them to replace it with what they're advertising. I wish there was some way to check whether I have an LCD screen short of taking apart the notebook. I hope that it is just a mistake, but I guess i'll have to follow up with Apple. Can any of the other recent MBP users confirm this? Its the sticker on that papery/cellophane like material that the actual notebook is packaged in.

The date would prove two things:
#1: He wasnt just making this up, no disrespect to anyone but you cant believe everything you see on the internet...

#2:...More importantly, it would show if apple indead sent obsolete packaging materials or if they intended to send this piece of packaging material...

P.S. ... apple promised that the new LED's would be mercury free...they made a huge big press release about how they were taking a step above and beyond everyone else...i would just like to know if apple if full of it or not especially since i am buying the new MBP tomorrow.

it must be an over site because it doesn't even make sense. the main point they advertised to switching to LED displays were, what a suprise, LED's which don't use an mercury, like the fluorescent lamps before them.

maybe call Apple customer relations and let them know about it, and see what they say.
