    Hi,
I have a new Santa Rosa Macbook Pro. I am currently running on battery. I am noticing that the LCD monitor is bright then fades a bit, then becomes bright again and then fades a bit. I am not sure of the impetus of this fading and stuff....like idle time or what -- but I do notice the fade in and out even while typing this message.

Just wanted to know if anyone has seen this.

    Thanks.

You may be seeing the auto dimming backlight at work. The LED backlight can change brightness so fast that any light fluctuation (say from a TV or even trees swaying in the breeze) can cause the display brightness to change. I noticed mine changing the other night while I was watching TV.

Oh. That's probably it. Thanks. Is that something that can be shut off?

There is a thread about the issue on the apple discussion forums and no there isn't any way to turn it off. Many are exchanging due to the issue.

I just bought the 15" MBP two days ago...turning off the auto dimming feature is quite easy! (I'm being blinded in the dark after flipping the lights a few times...)

-Click on the apple in the upper left hand corner
    -click on system preferences
    -click on displays
-on the bottom of the window below the brightness slider, there is a little check box that says something like "automatically adjust brightness...blah blah."
    -check it off
    -your all done

Just confirming what purcell reported. I found the brightness check box with a little exploration when I first got my new MacBook Pro - it was pretty annoying with it set to on, but works great once you click it off.
