My friends who own an old G4 told me that I should get a mat to cover the keys on my Macbook Pro I just bought. They said that the keys can make dents in your screen. Will that thin foam thing that was covering it before suffice? I'm using that now just cause it came on there, but if there's a better mat I should be using ... or do the Macbook Pros not have this issuse?

I have not seen this yet, but many notebooks suffer from that. If it makes you feel comfortable there are vendors who sell screen protectors, just do a google search. But I have not seen anyone complain about it here.

The keys on the Macbook Pro and Macbook are recessed and don't actually touch the screen... I guess this happens with somewhat older notebook models.

Ya, I would guess that if the keys smash into your lcd that you've probably got bigger problems at that moment. =) Both my Powerbook and MBP have a slightly raised keyboard..like 2mm above the palm rest maybe. But the screen compensates by being raised at least that much or more. You'd have to really put weight on the lid to cause damage. OR if you left a frozen twinky on your keyboard before closing it..that would also be bad. But a screen protector or microfiber cloth would be good for finger grease either way...sans twinky.

I have noticed this line that keeps reappearing on my macbook screen. I believe it's skin oil from my space bar. This worries me, so I might have to look into a screen protector, though, I'd rather not have the extra thing to deal with every time I open my macbook.

Or you can invest in a ShaggyMac @ www.shaggymac.com

My classmates(three of em), whom sit beside me, all have MacBooks, and I've noticed on two, that there is a horizontal 'smear' on the screen, which may be either dirt/grease from hands transferring from notebook keys, or the touchpad area may be a bit elevated, touching the screen when it is closed.

At least use the foam insert - but I prefer my shaggymac.
