Hi, i recently reinstalled OS X as i swapped the HDD, and now i cant choose when to turn on the keyboard illumination.

Before i swapped the HDD i could turn it on even on bright locations, and now i can only turn it on when its dark

does anyone know how to solve this?

Do you mean whenever you hit the illumination buttons it doesn't light up, but rather shows a circle with a slash through it?

In the previous gen MBP's, you couldn't turn on keyboard illumination in bright locations. The only way to do this would be to cover up the light sensor, and then it would turn on.

Maybe its the same situation with the new one, it could be that before the sensor thought you were in dark places even though you wern't.

I have that same "issue" as well.

But I think that it's the same thing with the older gen MBPs, in that you can't turn on the backlight when it's bright near you.

it works, but i want it to work when the lights are still on, because depending on how the light is shining on the laptop, it doesnt illuminate the keyboard

The keyboards do NOT light up unless the sensor detects it's dark out. So before the hard drive upgrade, you must have been in a darker room, or had your head in front of the sensor at the top of the display. It's working as intended, though I agree it would be nice to have the option to light the keyboard at any time...

i do believe there's an app out there that controls keyboard illumination... i think there may have been a thread about it before. i'd check, but i've got to write two papers tonight, and its go time :)

On my MBP the sensor is under the speakers, if you really wanted, you can rip open the case and cover up the sensor... a lot of work for something i don't see much value in... the ligth needs power and generate small amount of heat, neither are good in any laptop.
