Hi, I just bought my macbook air, and it is really amazing. Although I am fairly new to the mac operating system, it is fairly easy to use. But since I am new, I know there are things I don't know that can be really beneficial. Like I just figured out I had to turn on the firewall, even though the OS is pretty secure, I like the added protection. Is there anything else, whether it be programs, commands, or tips I should know/get? Thank you.

You puzzle me. Your signature says you own a M14X yet you say you own a macbook pro in the title and than you proceed to say you own a macbook air in the body text.

Congrats! I think it was a really smart move to get the MBA 13 over the MBP 13 stuff for your day-to-day stuff. That and the M14x should be a nice pair together. Time to update the sig!

Not really necessary but if you want a firewall, turn on builtin firewall functionality for inbound connections, and use LittleSnitch for outbound. LittleSnitch is quite verbose, will ask you a lot, but it works as advertised: specify what programms are allowed to make a connection with which servers.

VLC plays pretty much anything. You don't need to download codecs separately, it's built into VLC.

The 2011 macbook air is a nice machine. enjoy it and check out these apps.

caffeine is a nice program. it keeps your machine awake when your trying to do long operations like burning ripping or copying a large amount of files. annoying that your machine will sleep when doing these things. youd think that it wouldnt but it does.

clipmenu is a clipboard history app. works great and sits in your menu bar. quickly go through anything youve copied.

I also use weatherbug for mac. this puts the temperature in your menu bar.
