hey guys, i finaly ordered the (white) Macbook (spec on the sig)... how come the guy on the phone said it will be delivered at the end of next week (8-10-06), but the delivery date on the order status page said that it'll be delivered on the 13th?

i'll see if i can do a review after couple of weeks of using it :)...

Awesome. You wont regret it. ;)

I got mine today and I'm extremely happy with it. (black MacBook)

And yeah, they told me that it was going to be shipped on the 26th. But it was shipped on the 21st. Maybe they tell you a date a couple of days ahead of the real date so that you're happier with their service. ;)

do i need virus/spyware protection for mac? would virus and spyware be completely deleted when i clean out the internet caches? do i need firewall? or is the built-in one enough?

    Hey!

Nice to read that you ordered a MB! I am about to do the same. Good luck!

    Just a question:

Did you get your MB from Apple?
If so, did you get a printer, with the promotion they offer? Which one?

    Again, good luck! :)

Some companies do make virus/spyware protection software for the Mac, but at this point at least I probably wouldn't worry too much about it. As it is, most Viruses and Spyware are usually Windows-specific, so they aren't going to be able to execute on your machine.

Note that it's not impossible, and you should always practice common sense precautions regardless of what OS you're using. In the case of OS X, that generally involves being careful with any software you run, especially if that software asks you for your Administrator password and you didn't expect it. Make sure any OS X software you download is from a legitimate download site.

OS X's built-in firewall should be fine.

Awesome! I'm sure you'll love the little beast. Really, after being able to kinda compare the MBP and the MB... i almost went to the MB, if it weren't for hte fact that I will be running pro apps and really need lots of desktop space.

    I'm jealous!!!

It's crazy how they add on a couple hundred dollars for the black one, and try to use 20 more gigs on a harddrive as an excuse :)

Actually, i'ts not that crazy. Every notebook manuf has been chargin extra for different colored laptops for years.
technically, 150 is cheap. I've seen alienware and other places charge a LOT more than 150 for a different color.

    thanks!
yeah i ordered it from apple over the phone.
no there is no special promotion in here, altough i purchase it with my student discount.

did u get the 17" one? is it hot under full load? i checked one out in store the other day, and it is REALLY hot on idle. and decided it is too hot for my liking. should i worried about heat corrupting my data or will the hard drive failed? (i know i'm a bit paranoid)

Basically just take a look at the Mac users guide sticky for information on how you should setup your accounts, doing what is recommended will save you grief.

Mac OS X, has a very nice firewall built right in, and it also comes defaulted with every port closed, unlike windows which doesn't (NetBios for example in windows). For current day, Viruses shouldn't really be much concern, recently I read an article stating how Norton specifically, that their OSX virus program actually creates holes.

All in all, that sticky is your friend! I will probably update the sticky sometimes this upcoming week with more useful stuff.

Have fun with that Macbook when you get it!

    cheers.

    :)

Now if everyone else would just read it, we get a quite a few questions that are already asked in the sticky. Maybe if I change the subtitle under the thread title to "Free iPod here!" people will look at it? Of course I'm just kidding.

That MacBook (OS X) is gonna change your life. It did for mine.

Now if I could just get my instructor to understand the reason why Apple went to x86 processors was NOT because Apple is starting to "go all Windows now". I about fainted in class.

I wouldn't be surprised if he got that from reading Ziff Davis magazines or something. After the Intel switch at least a couple of their columnists said it meant that Apple was going to give up on OS X and just become a PC vendor selling high class PC's (something along the lines of Palm moving to becoming a Windows Mobile-focused company).

    I got the 15".
It runs fairly cool really. Full load does get hot, but not unbearable. And about same temp as my Sager running a 2.8 p4 that was almost 10 lbs and like, 3 inches thick.

I doubt the 17" gets hotter. It has more room to spread the heat around. Not sure though since it doens't seem a lot of people have the 17" models.

Keep in mind that the store models probably have the old logic boards which made them get VERY HOT even under idle. The current MBP aren't like that.

I've read that the X1600 in the 17" MBP isn't underclocked (or at least not underclocked as much), so it's conceivable that it could still generate similar amounts of heat anyway.

Aye, but I bet that the 17" doesn't keep the x1600 clocked all the way up all the time. Just my guess, as it would save power and generate less heat...

That would be a pleasent idea... having an integrated and dedicated video card.

Yeah, honestly I'm kind of surprised the Sony SZ seems to be the only notebook out there that offers it. I think it would be a great option to offer on all sorts of notebooks; heck, even with the really powerful laptops I think it would be nice to have an option to switch to integrated graphics (i.e. even if you have a crazy gaming laptop with a 7900gs or 7900gtx in it, when you're just using it for word processing or web browsing it would be nice to be able to switch).
