Did I have the right reasons to buy?

I wanted to spend this money on an i7 2600k desktop, but I don't really need all that power unless I want to emulate PS2, PCSX2.

With the MacBook, I have the opportunity to experience and learn OSX to improve my IT knowledge, so I will be able to work with OSX in the future.

The MacBook has the i7 2.66 Ghz and anti-glare, which would really help with real estate when working in web design, and the MacBook is expected to last me 4-5 years, considering my CPU usage needs...

Really want to learn the OSX environment because everyone at my university (rich) uses MacBooks. Even the IT department.

Also want to experience Mac only software, such as Final Cut, Pages, etc.

Right now I have the UL30VT-A1, a dual thread single core laptop. Would I see a big improvement?

I can't see any "wrong reasons". You said you want to learn OS X and use Mac only software. Final Cut needs a powerful processor and good GPU. Looks like you made a great choice.

i7 will be a big improvement, is the .2.66Ghz dual or quad? if its dual you will have four threads if quad you will have 8. I just did a search and found out its dual core, what was your speed of your old computer?

    1.6 Ghz with Asus Turboboost
    single core dual threads

its not really old... its less than a year old because i bought it for university
i wanted a light laptop for university, but when i got into web design as a hobby i found out i need much more screen estate and power for image/video editing

Does it have an i3 or just an Intel Core processor? You will notice a big increase especially when using processor intense programs.

you'll enjoy it. I did the same thing for the same reasons around this time last year. I don't know if I'll ever buy a different brand of *laptop*.

You should notice a pretty large increase in speed, especially when doing processor intensive tasks. According to everything I can find about your laptop your ASUS is a DUAL CORE single thread CPU. It says a Core 2 Duo, its two cores on a single Die, now the lowest MBP you can get right now is Dual Core hyper threaded, and a bigger increase in minimum core speed, add in turbo boost (depending on application) and you have a pretty powerful computer.

Do you wear a hoodie 6 days out of the week?
Do you look like Justin Long?
    Then yes, you did.
