Hey all! Quick question. I told my gf to buy an Ibook not too long ago because its reliable and has good battery life. The only thing she uses it for is AIM and typing papers. However I was wondering if anyone had problems with AIM on this computer. It keeps signing her off and back on again at random times. There's nothing wrong with the internet connection it just boots her off and back on. I re-downloaded aim and re-installed it but that doesn't fix it. Is it possible that the wirless card stops randomly? has anyone else had issues with this?

I would put more of the blame on the aim service then the notebook. My suggestion (if she is using the aim client) would be to either use ichat, or download and use adium. it contains all IM protocols in it.

Yeah, it sounds like the AIM service is acting up. I've had problems in the past where my AIM connection would drop at random times. I thought it was a problem with my wireless network but it seems it was not.

I occasionally experience the same problem with my iBook. I've noticed it tends to happen when I'm not actively using the internet. However, in my case, I would blame the barely-compatible USB WiFi adapter I have.

Well I Know that I chat is clearly the most mac friendly, the problem is that she hates I-Chat. "Shes a compulsive Away message/Profile checker and thats immensly easier with AIM Is there an alternate service anyone can suggest that works like AIM does? Personally I use trillian for PC, Even though its a multi-network client I only use it for AIM. What do you all think?

I'll second Radcom's Adium suggestion. I have it on my iBook and it seems to work reliably (although I use it with MSN rather than AIM) and is pretty customizable as well.
