I got myself a 15in Macbook Pro back in 2010 for XMAS, and haven't really had a single problem with the computer itself at all. However within the last week or so I noticed some damage to my charging cord(or power adapter), the wire near the part you plug in the mac being exposed.

So I decided to buy a new one, a magsafe 60W, and I got it today. When I plugged it into my macbook several problems occurred. The mouse would become sluggish in response, and the battery would say (Not charging) or (calculating) and my power left in the macbook began to slowly drop. My macbook is now completely dead with power and the charger doesn't seem to be charging it at all.

I'm wondering if the fact the charger that came with my 2010 Macbook pro was a 85w, and the one i tried to replace it with is a 60w. Would that be the problem? Should I get an 85w Magsafe Power Adapter? Or is there something else wrong?

Any help would be appreciated, and I thank you for the time.

The 60W adapter isn't going to cut it for the 15-inch MBP. You need the 85W version.

Apple had a recall on those Magsafe adapters, and you might be able to get a free replacement.

If the cord is already falling apart, Apple will probably replace it for free. Is there an Apple Store near you?
