I recently had some problems with my MBP...

Then I was able to fix it by booting from the OSX cd and reinstalling the OS. I was able to keep all my files.

Is there a way I can run a check up on the the hardware, or at least the HardDrive, and possibly just the whole computer?

    Thanks in advance!

Insert the OS X installation disk, and restart your Mac while holding down the D key. The Apple hardware test will then start, which will scan your computer for any hardware errors.

+1, or you could repair disk permissions, and also run Disk Utility to check it also. ;)
