I want to know that if my purchased MBP screws up within a year, it's covered by Apple, without having me to buy AppleCare for $300 and then send it in for repairs.
It can also be nice to break the laptop intentionally for a refresh.. maybe get a free Leopard..

Other than the phone support being limited to the first 90 days, yes, the standard warranty is the same as AppleCare. So you don't get better service with AppleCare (other than the unlimited, anytime phone support).

Although there are those credit card companies that automatically double warranties on electronics bought. I'm not sure if Apple officially recognizes these warranty extensions though. -
Apple naturally recognizes only its own warranty commitments, which would be the limited warranty (the first year) and AppleCare (another two years) if you get that. Anything a store or credit card company or whatever offers outside of that is between the customer and that store/company.
