I am a graphic design student on a budget and am looking at getting a 14" iBook. I do a lot of web design, print design and some video editing and will be running programs like Photoshop, Flash and After Effects.

I want to know if the iBook will handle this...does anyone with experience know???

I'm not an Apple user, but If you buy the most recent iBook refresh that has the processor speed bump and more standard RAM, then there's no doubt you'll be fine with this.

Might want to consider upgrading to a faster hard drive which will help system performance.

I just got a 14 inch iBook and have been pretty happy with it so far, although I'm not sure how it would perform for the applications you mentioned. Most of the shortfalls I've read about concern graphic-intensive games that require fast 3D rendering. My guess would be that Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Flash, and similar programs woudn't be too problematic. Flash and Shockwave sites seem to run fine on my computer.

The only concern I would have is with the screen resolution. It's great for everyday tasks and web browsing, but I'm not sure if the resolution is high enough if you're really going to get picky about photographic details in Photoshop.

As far as a hard drive upgrade, can this be done without voiding the Apple warranty? I don't think a hard drive upgrade was an option when I bought mine.

Just bear in mind that the G4 isn't exactly a cutting edge processor so it probably won't fly in heavy duty apps like photoshop. That being said, the ibook still compares positively with similarly configured wintel machines because of the OS X operating system.

Thanks, the replies have been most helpful. I will look into the hard-drive upgrade...
