My computer is a MBP 5.1 2.53 ghz. Very first generation unibody.

Everything is stock except a Vertex 2 SSD, and 6gb of RAM.

I put in a DVD and as the movie starts to play, it says "Skipping over damaged area" and takes me forward 15 minutes. It keeps doing this until the whole movie is over in just 20 minutes.

I then bought a brand new DVD and put it in. Same thing. Skipping over damaged area...but this was a brand new DVD!!

ALso, when I hit eject, it takes a while and all I hear is a periodic clunking clunk clunk. Until finally, 10 minutes later it ejects.

your DVD disc might be bad... but sadly its likely the drive is what caused it get damaged in the first place. Have you tried the same discs (before and after using them on the Mac) in a different drive/computer?

Yes sometimes drives go bad, and they can sometimes even ruin the discs you put in them, so don't just pop in a bunch of discs until you troubleshoot a bit further.
