I don't forsee any new Macbook Pro updates anytime soon, at the earliest October but I even doubt then. If by some far-fetched chance anything was to happen, it'd happen Monday at WWDC, so you can always wait till then.

But now is definitely a great time to buy.

Apple never reduce their prices themselves..that said amazon normally will
offer $150 rebate...you can try that..

Since it just had a fairly big update, I doubt you will see anything change in the next 6+ months. The most I see happening is a CPU bump or ram increase as prices drop in general.

The only upgrade you'll see is Leopard in my opinion, which comes out in October.

I doubt there will be any changes in platform or price until the next Intel update. Most Intel based notebook manufacturers tend to follow their roadmap now apart from minor spec updates. I guess we'll see another update or a completely new model sometime early next year when Penryn is released.

I've just bought a MBP 2.4ghz and installed a Seagate 7200rpm drive along with 4gb RAM.

It's easily the best notebook I've ever owned.

Usually the only time Apple lowers their prices is when they are trying to get rid of a SKU preceding an upgrade to one of their product lines. If you live around any Apple Stores or if your school has a Apple Store I would go check with them. You'll probably be able to pick one up a MBP for around $1500 if you don't mind a slightly outdated model.

I was just about to ask, what does Apple - or any other manufacturer - do with the stock of older machines; espcially Apple, since they don't sell them on their sites anymore and they have such strong control over their resellers?

well i finally bought the macbook pro, the 15' 2.4, Now it sits proudly on my computer table, next to my tumi bag. the bad thing is that it looks so nice that I wash my hands just before i use it so as not to get it dirty. I wonder how long that will last.

I can't confirm this, but I seem to recall a thread on NBR that said Intel might lower the prices of their chips in July and that might lower the price of the MBP as a result, but I'm not that sure if that's just a rumor or fact.

Its just like anything with computer, something better is always coming out "soon" ... if you just keep waiting and waiting and... etc... you will never end up with anything :p

Actually, when updates on a particular machine are about to arrive Apple begins to lower the shipments to their resellers...and I guess the resellers have to slowly sell off the machines themselves. A local London Drugs (a Canadian department store) is still selling the Apple Pro mouse :p (not as in "silly", as in "ewww" :D) and the PowerMac G5.
