So I ordered the 15 inch MBP with the 7200 rpm hard drive and there's a 4-6 week shipping delay. Is anyone else in the same boat? I really wonder why there's such a delay, especially considering there's no delay for the 17 inch 7200 rpm MBP. Does anyone have any input on this matter? I really hope the computer is shipped before the date projected on the website.

I like the looks of the newly released into the wild 250GB 5400rpm drives.

Perpendicular, plus higher platter density means their transfer rates are right there with the much smaller capacity 7200rpm drives.

I am not waiting for the 7200rpm, they consume more power.

I am waiting for my next pay check (to come on this Friday)! Yay!!

But don't the high-capacity 7200rpm drives use perpendicular recording, making them even faster than their perpendicular recording 5400rpm relatives and regular 7200rpm siblings?

I'm interested in this, I am hoping to get one of the new MBPs a little later in the year and was thinking about the 7200 drive option.

Would they really use noticeably more power? Ok they have to spin faster but surely they also spin for less time...

Yea I'm still waiting for my 15" as well. Another month and half or so the delivery estimate says.

Well, at least if you're just considering the options from Apple, they don't offer a 250GB 5400rpm drive. In fact, the largest they have is 200GB, and it's only 4200RPM. So there's really no competition as to which is the fastest from their selections.

If I were to install one myself though, I'd go for a 200GB 7200RPM drive

I'm going to order the MBP with the standard 160gig 5400 drive and then replace it with the 250gig 5400 drive.

I currently have a 160 gig 5400 in my MBP that I installed myself. Not that big a deal if you follow the directions. Having done it once, it's not a big deal.

I'm also going to upgrade the memory from 2gig to 4 gig. I purchase the memory from Crucial for $ 299 as opposed to $ 750 from Apple. The 250 gig hard drive was purchased from PC Connection for $ 189.

i believe the 17" and 15" models are using different models of HDD according to some posts in the Apple discussions 15" are using Seagate while the 17" models are already shipping with the Fujitsu model, but that could be wrong, it seems that most of the time the HDD manufacturer is pretty random for all notebooks.

even Fujitsu compture's don't always ship with Fujitsu HDD's

Oh nice. Seagates are a bit faster on average than Fujitsu aren't they?

i'm waiting for the 7200 rpm drive.

yes, the higher aureal density on the 250 gig drive is likely going to put average read and write rates somewhere in the vicinity of the 7200 rpm drive (still expect the 7200 rpm drive to win tho), but i am also interested in the better seek times as this is key when loading music samples on the fly.

the rest of the myths about heat and power are adressed in the link provided on page 1 of this thread. they are just that, myths.

i am also a big seagate fan, so i want to be reasonably sure i am getting seagate. 160gb 7200rpm drive is a pretty sure bet for this.

at the end of the day, with the low cost of an external enclosure and a 500 gb 3.5 inch hard drive, if storage space ever becomes an issue for me, I am just going to get an external hard drive. i totally fail to see any need for a 250gb laptop hard drive. with the help of my desktop, i've done just fine on a 4200 rpm 15gb hd in my laptop for the last few years.

7200.1 is just slightly faster than 5400.3。
NOT WORTHY OF WAITING OR PAY MORE :)

    7200.2 is another case.
