I know that the Montevina platform is supposed to launch around spring/summer 2008 and was wondering whether Apple is likely to reupdate the MBP's with the new platform before the end of August. I'm planning to buy a MBP at that time and was wondering whether they would update again since they just updated it with the Santa Rosa just a month ago

Yeah, I would expect a MBP update just before the Back to School rush around August :).

what about a SSD option? is apple likely to offer this on the next gen of MBP's since they did on the air?

And there will likely be another update thereafter, and after, and after. Simply, there's no better time to buy a new MBP than when you need it the most :) If you can wait, then you should wait. Technology moves so fast that new technology and products enter the market all the time.

    Sorry, I was rambling....

The next update should be for the Montevina.

I have 2 questions about the update if anyone could answer:

    1) Is there a noticeable speed and quiet difference between a HDD and SSD that it would be worth several hundred extra dollars?

    2) Is the Montevina platform a significant amount faster than the Santa Rosa?

Thanks, sorry I ask so many questions @_@

Actually, I don't think SSD will make a huge difference in a Mac that it would in a PC. When I moved from a 5400rpm drive in my Macbook a 7200rpm drive, I don't really notice any speed increases, nor faster boot times really.

Monteniva will have ever so slightly faster CPU's (we are talking 30 - 50 Mhz faster), but you won't notice an increase in performance. Also, DDR3 @ 800 Mhz.

-Possibly Less heat with 25Watt Penryn.
-Possibly faster startup depending on how Apple uses (if they use it) the built-in 2GB NAND flash (Robson 2)
    -Possibly better battery life
    -Possibly a better GPU (9600MGT)
    -Possibly WiMax chipset

    1) There is, generally, a significant performance boost when moving to SSD over HDD, in regards to random access times. Note that it's actually SLOWER to do long, continuous tasks, according to benchmarks. So your programs/OS will boot up faster, and the whole experience should seem "snappier," but doing some long encoding or something could actually take LONGER than with a HDD. Also, from the stories I've seen regarding the MBA, it seems like the SSD doesn't really help (even compared to a 4200 RPM HDD) in overall use. So...that's a judgment call.

    2) Montevina will introduce several changes. It will allow for 1066 MHz FSB processors (current Penryn machines are 800 MHz), and 800 MHz RAM (current cap is 667). I believe WiMAX support will also be included in some form, though that might not really be important for a while. So, yes, there should be some substantial improvements in Montevina.

Just before, or right after the back to school rush, do you mean? I'd think they would wait for the stocks to liquidate before the new models come out; and a great way to sell out the existing stock is to have education customers finish it off.

They will update their laptops to Montevina (+ probably GeForce 9 mobile) in June-July, maybe early August.

    Probably October...

Montevina is supposed to launch officially in June, usually apple updates come out few months after launch e.g. intel launched penryn in nov and apple updated in feb.

Plus most manufacturers tend use back to school to clear stock in summer and announce new products in october in preparation for holiday sales

They are long overdue for a revamp, but given apple's track record of first gen releases, I wouldn't want to wait until october to find out i should wait until march 2009 for them to work out the kinks.

I agree with one of the previous posters that you should just get it when you absolutely need it. Either way, you'll be happy. As for me, I've been waiting since last year to pull the trigger, but I just can't see myself doing it until my machine dies.

^ Well, that's the principle; and I agree that it makes no sense to wait for months for an update.

Yet, people are rightly more reluctant around 'update season', since it's usually a matter of *weeks* before a much better machine comes out *for the same price*.
