Ey guys, I know I know this is a notebook forum but this is the mac section so I think I am entitled to post this here(many others do it anyways).

Well here is the deal, I have a 30GB video ipod for over a year and a half(2 years come June) and just recently(a couple months ago) it began acting up on me. It would do things like show a messed up screen with various lines of color. The back light would be on but there would only be lines of colors, which I think was the display but distorted. This would happed about 3/4s of the time. If I turned it off for long enough and then turned it on, it would return back to normal. Also the device would still be able to play music perfectly fine even with the distorted screen, just navigating menus would not be an option.

So just this past weekend I found that my ipod doesn't even turn on anymore. i know that shouldn't be happening because I had just recently charged it about a week and a half ago(I seldom use it) and rarely used it. It should still have over half charge remaining. So I just tried hooking it up to my computer to see if the computer detects it, and maybe it could wake it up... but no luck there. Any of you guys know about this issue or know some way to fix this issue?

The warranty on these things is for only one year and it has obviously expired. I am not planning on paying for repairs, but you never know, if any of you have any advice or steps I could take that would be much appreciated.

Also, note that when I could power it on, I tried reformatting the ipod to fix the screen issue, but that did not work. Because of this I am thinking it is hardware related...

Its a long shot, but try plugging into the mains a/c (not pc), then toggle the hold switch a few times, then hold down the center button and menu for at least 10sec. This should perform a hard reset. But given that the reformat didn't work I think your ipod is dead :(.
On the upside I hear that there might be a good excuse to buy an iphone in June !

    :)
ps I remember with my 4G ipod that I had similar issues, and this was due to a dying battery, I replaced it myself with a 3rd party battery and the issues went away. Unfortunately about a month later I dropped it and broke it for good... go figure... I think SJ has evil powers that somehow makes bad things happen to your old ipod forcing you to upgrade.

I unfortunately dont have my AC adapter with me, i use my computer to charge while I am at the university. But I will try that. Yeah, I actually am planning on getting the 3G iphone, but I would really prefer to at least have the ipod turn on so that I could use it as external storage or something at the very least...

    Thanks for the help.

As he said, you could try replacing the battery. ifixit.com has directions and the tools to do it.

Sounds crazy, but sometimes if my computer won't detect it, I leave it plugged in, and restart the computer with it plugged in - when I do that, it ends up detecting. :) Try that?

If that doesn't work and you've tried the whole 'hard reboot' and things, I'm afraid to say that your iPod is deaad. :(

Nice to see that my Ipod isn't the only one partly not working. Thanks for the idea with the battery, I will try that.
