Im thinking about getting an ipad...but Im wondering if its possible to load movies onto the ipad? For example movies Ive downloaded, or movies Ive ripped from DVDs etc...

Is there a smooth way to do it or is it similar to the process for ipods?

I've put movies on my iPod with a program called Videora

Took about 50 minutes to convert a 1.5 hour movie, on my old C2D 2.8Ghz UMBP 17.

Handbrake + Just about any video format = a .mp4 file that iTunes can read. Handbrake even has presets for most all Apple products.

Another vote for Handbrake, however VLC for the iPad is another option which allows you to drag movies right over without converting them.

I use Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip and iMovie to convert videos for use on the iPad, iPod Touch and the iPod Nano (fifth gen).

You dont need to convert movies and sync them through iTunes any more.

There is a free app called CineXplayer - another free one is VLC Player.
Both available via the App Store.

Both will allow you to run your avi/Divx/Xvid files on your iPad - no need to convert them etc first. You just use the app to transfer your movies straight across from your Mac/PC, and they just run on the iPad.

    Simple.

+1 for CineXplayer. VLC is the better known name, but I've found it to be choppy with some video files at times. Also CineXplayer currently has a few more features than VLC does at the moment.

Ive found CineXplayer to play a lot more movie files then VLC. Plus its easy to delete movies from within the app, whereas with VLC you cant.

For a paid-application suggestion that works great I'd vote for 4Media DVD Ripper. I have the Ultimate edition of the software and not only does it work great but it's also very easy to use.

^^ Why would someone purchase this instead of using Handbrake?

    ^^^
I used to use Handbrake but last year I recall I had an issue with one particular DVD that I wanted to rip to my iPod, nothing worked but I tried the trial version of DVD Ripper by 4Media and it worked. I also preferred the interface and how easy it was (very intuitive yet deep - ridiculous amount of fine control over audio and video) so I ended up buying it.

Its just personal preference, nothing against Handbrake.

To the OP, you can download both (free trial) and try them out side by side. Here's the link to DVD Ripper.

Agreed. I was just wondering your reason for not sticking with Handbrake. :)

Try using cinexplayer man. No hassle in converting the movies first THEN transferring it to the ipod. Just plug the ipod in, open itunes and you can transfer the files straight to the app. (provided the video is in the right format)

I had problems with VLC, it has video but no sound. So I used buzz player. (both supports quite a lot of formats)

Just returned my ipad, liked it a lot, but the whole download this or download that app to make it do stuff got old fast. Liked it, didn't love it.

All you had to do was put CineXPlayer on the iPad.
You simply put the movie on teh iPad with CineXplayer - no converting the film etc at all since CineXPlayer plays then natively.

I do this all the time with my movies. I then connect the iPad to my HDTV with the VGA adaptor and watch the movie on my TV!

I use Ovideo, but will checkout cinexplayer also. Ovideo works great, but costs a little.
