:apple2: Is it true that Apple is going to switch to Intel, like have Intel processor and stuff, i read it on here somewhere. If you know, would that mean that games could be on Mac just as easy as Windows, like Xbox to playstation as an example. I love Apple laptops, but I love games too!

Apple do announce that they are going to use Intel CPU, but does it means that the WinTel user can install Mac OS on their machine? I don't think so. Intel might produce a custom CPU with special shipset for Mac ONLY isn't it?
And making a NEW standard is always what Intel good at.....

your paritally right, but os x has already been hacked (just need to remove one small block of code or something) and will run on any windows machine. And it won't be the processor to only run on mac, but a DRM security chip on the motherboard.

What I heard was, the two Apple engineer who compiled Mac OS source code on Windows and made it operated on WinTel system were already been fired. Moreover, this Wintel modified Mac OS requiring the CPU which built in SSE2. So, even everything is on the sky, but still can smell that apple might want their system be operated on certain machine they preferred.

Further clairification, it will be a DRM chip on the mobo that will decide wheather os x will run on an intel machine or not( thing is not many machines have that chip yet). Plus the last five versions of OS X have been compiled with a dual binary, which means that it will run on the intel and powerpc processors without any further modification needed. (except for the hacked version which removes the check for the drm chip)

Apple is definately switching to Intel (but the switch is not going to be over until about 2007, powerbooks and powermacs will most likely be the last ones to switch)

What I heard was that Apple was going to try to put some kind of hardware protection on their new computers so you can't dual boot, but I don't think it's going to be long before someone gets around it.

Also, quite a few games are available on Mac (not the titles that I would buy, though), and I don't necessarily think the Intel switch will encourage more companies to work with Mac to a noticable extent.

Im pretty sure that powerbooks and ibooks will be one of the first intel powered macs. So that they can get a needed performance boost.

Plus i believe Jobs said that they won't directly do anything to stop people form loading windows on the intel machines. It would be better business for them to allow dual booting with windows.

When it comes to gaming on the mac, the main thing stopping companies from porting over is that microsoft has made another monopoly with there direct X video, whereas macs generally use OpenGL. So typically any OpenGL game will be on both systems, but a direct x game has to be ported. [i also guess the cisc and risc cpu structures may also cause some problems (but not so much anymore with the switch)]
