Hi everyone. I'm thinking of putting a 128 GB SSD drive in my 2011 13" Macbook Pro. It came with the 750 GB 5400 Hard drive. I would like to keep the 750 Gig Hard drive as an external drive. Would I have to back-up everything on the 5400 Hard Drive? I have been reading various threads and it seems the SSDs are great with fast boot-up times and accessing applications on the web. I would want the 5400 hard drive to just save music files, etc. Is this scenario possible and would it void my warranty with Apple? I don't want to remove my DVD drive... Thank you for whatever advice you can give.

".... accessing applications on the web." ? On the web? Your internet connection is what makes for faster access to web browsing applications. The SSD will however be a huge improvement over a mechanical HDD when it comes to loading applications, reading and writing things onto the drive etc etc. It will be faster in any way possible compared to a mechanical hdd.
And yes, you can use the 750GB drive as an external drive, just get a 2.5" caddy to fit it in.
It should not void your warranty, no. As you can easily (just a couple of minutes) replace the drive anyways before sending it back for warranty work. -
Thank you for your answer.
