I just went to install leopard, but it said i have to delete all my existing data? I thought you could just upgrade without deleting everything? Is it because i have already partitioned my hard drive (i use boot camp)?

I'm pretty sure that Leopard will upgrade previous versions automatically - did it find your old installation and give you some options?

Yes, Boot Camp has nothing to do with it, its a separate partition that OS X doesn't care about (sounds harsh :p). As Xander said, there are three ways to install a new OS X version...and in your case, you'll want to Upgrade or Archive & Install.

when it asks me to choose where i want to install it, it gives me 2 options, macintosh hd and windows hd. both have a yellow exclamation mark over them. I expected this over the windows hd, but i have no idea why its over the macintosh hd. When i select the mac drive, it tells me that everything from my hd will be deleted if i continue.
    what do i do?

in the same window that asks you what HD partition you want to install on, there should be a button that says "Options" towards the bottom left of the window. Click on that.

next, you should see some metal stairs, . . . go down them, then. . ., luck up, you should see some piping, follow that. . .Mr. Hammond I think we're back in business.

There should be the option to do an archive and install as well. FWIW, I would just do a clean install anyway. What I did was backup my data to an external drive and formatted. I ended up with an extra 40gigs! I had 40 gigs of crap! That is even after I reinstalled all the programs I wanted and put my data back.
