My friend's hard drive crashed. He took it into apple and they told him he needed to replace it with a new hard drive. Does he need to buy a new installation disk once we install the new hard drive?

No, just use the one that came with it.

The thing is i don't think it came with an installation disk. When he first got the computer he simply turned it on and os x installed itself. With a new hard drive how does he install os x?
