You can install Tiger if you don't prefer Leopard however you will have to do an Erase and Install and since Tiger is a lower version of Leopard the upgrade and Archive and Install option won't be available.

Be very cautious about buying the iMac install discs on Ebay unless the disc specifies the exact model of iMac and your iMac matches it. My new iMac's Tiger disc just says 'iMac" Mac OS X install disc. Check with the seller if the discs will work in your iMac.

i guarantee you that that disk will not work. I am sure you can find an actual Tiger install disk.

for the record, why oh why would you want to do that in the first place?

With 10.5.2 coming soon (fixing slight annoyances such as stacks), and the current 10.5.1 offering no clear disadvantages in usability or performance over 10.4.11, I agree with the laughing man, why would you want to switch back?

If you are experiencing problems with OS X Leopard, such as beachballing or kernel panics, consider carrying out an Archive and Install of Leopard. That is pretty much the same as Windows' Repair OS or something, which would place a new copy of Leopard on your system while keeping all your applications, preferences and settings in tact.

Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer

I do not quite get why you want to come back to tiger. Leopard really rocks!

Does this actually work well? With Windows' "Repair" installs, I find that the system is even wonkier and sluggish afterwards. Is the "Archive and Install" feature really almost as good as a fresh install for OSX?

That right there is the one and only reason I know to use Tiger over Leopard, and it's why my brother hasn't switched yet.

There are no retail versions of Tiger for Intel out there because all Intel based Macs came with 10.4.3 or better.

Honestly, call digidesign and pester them a little and maybe they'll release the update for Leopard. There are new MacPro's out and they will ship with Leopard only, so I don't know what they are waiting for...

I just did an Archive and Install last night. Initially I did an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, and was experiencing some minor issues such as icons not appearing on the menu bar, and Safari crashing etc.
My Leopard is now great. And also boots up faster. And the weird Guest account does not show up on the login screen anymore.

Leopard does have its share of problems, but I would wait a few days. 10.5.2 should be out anytime, and if the speculation is even close, it will fix a lot of issues.

After a few phone calls and some looking around, there is a rumour (Keep in mind, not confirmed) that Digidesign will release the new version this week.

I hope that they do though... My brother is getting his new Macbook to replace his stolen one in the next few weeks, and he'll want to run ProTools on that for when he does recordings away from home. (Easier to take a laptop, an m-box, and cables to somebody's house compared to having them bring a standup bass, amp, and etc. to you).
