I have an old macbook white 1.83 ghz intel GMA 950 macbook that i would like to upgrade the HD in and install Leopard OSX/Snow leopard on. Could i install the new HD and install the new OSX from an external DVD drive? The internal DVD drive is toast and truly i do not feel like replacing it.

It should work. You should also be able to install OSX from a usb stick. You can copy the SL dvd to a usb stick without much problem. Use google to find instructions.

Plug in the external USB DVD drive and reboot holding the "option" key... If it (should) come up as an option to boot (from the USB DVD drive) you are golden...
