If I were to order a new MBP through the phone, can I 'negotiate' deals/discounts the way you can with Dell?

With Dell, people can call up and get a nice discount on their customized laptop. What is the deal with Mac? I never had ANY Apple products EVER so I am kinda uninformed/ignorant.

    Thanks!

I've never heard of or had any success myself in negotiating prices with Apple. Don't think you'll have much luck either.

Um maybe there are people who would be more knowledgeable than me on this subject, but I think you won't be able to negotiate deals.

I'm not sure, but I think Mac prices stay pretty firm and the most discounts you'll ever get is a student discount, or discounts through a university.

no, you won't get a discount on phone unless apple makes a mistake concerning your order and the csr feels that you may be entitled to a "gift".

The only way I know to get discounts from Apple: If you know any student order the laptop on their name and get the student discount.

Nope. You pay the premium and then you have the ability to be snobish for the difference.

Deals on a new mac, you must be joking? Only way that's possible is if someone stole it from the Mac store and it trying to sell it because its a 'hot item' and needs to be moved quickly.

Unless you buy as much as I do, no. And even then the discounts are not as flexible. It's the student or business discount, and that's it. As far as pricematching is concerned, who knows - I guess it's worth a try.

I managed to get $2 off a refurb ipod. ;)

I think you might have some shot at it with refurbs.
With some of the current offers (if you're a student, free ipod touch that you can resell, cashback from certain credit cards), you can end up with a little bit of a discount depending on how you work it.

My total order would have 2980€, I got everything for 2670 with all my student discounts and a further one from the college I go to.

Apple has EPP (like Dell's EPP) but you have to work for participating companies or be part of certain Unions (eg. Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada - PIPSC), in which case you'd get a direct link to a unique Apple Store online with all prices discounted. They're typically discounted more than Educational Pricing but not by much.

The other option is to get it from places like BestBuy where they routinely (every 2-3 months if memory serves me) have coupons for Reward Zone members for $100 off any purchase of $1000 or more, so you'd get $100 discount on any Mac product - which is generally about the same as Educational pricing.

Unfortunately, I've never heard of on-the-fly discounts by sales reps through apple. Dell OTOH, yes it's very typical.

Yeah, I agree with ATC, try Future Shop and/or Best Buy, where they routinely have $50-100 sales on Macs. Apple directly never has sales (other than Black Friday) or allows bargaining!

Apple does indeed allow bargaining... of course they never agree to anything, their price is firm, but you can bargain all you want, and if you tick them off, they'll just raise their price on you.

I just received my new MBP (see signature) and since I'm a college student I received $200 off my MBP purchase. I also received the free Apple iPod Touch 8GB which I sold for $200 on eBay, and when my rebate comes I can throw $400 total back on my credit card. So if you think about it, I received nearly $600 in discounts ($200 instant education discount, and $400 from buying/selling ipod touch and receiving the rebate).

This is now my second Macbook (first MBP) and my fourth computer. I also have a new 32GB iPhone 3GS, and a 16GB iPod Nano 4th gen. I found the iPod Touch to be a complete waste (even though it's a sweet device I had no need). Perhaps you could sell the Touch for some extra $$$?

Yeah sure, they'd really raise the price because you ticked them off. Then what would prevent said person from just purchasing it online or going to an Apple store?

Wow, a $200 education discount. I only get $100. May I ask, which college is that?

It's not the college, it's the model. Standard discount on a MBP is $100. dla did not buy a standard MBP, though :)

We used to do that to customers at the last machine shop I worked at. If we already did the work, and they come in after everything is done trying to take us down on price, we would start charging more.

Your bill is $400. You ask for it to be $300... It's now $500. We don't have time to screw around and deal with people trying to get a lower price. It is what it is, and if you had a problem with the price, you should have said something before you agreed to have us do the work.

This doesn't work so well with retail, where they have the option to leave and go somewhere else... But in the services industry, where we have your stuff that we fixed... :D

We were in the clear. The customer agreed to a price before we started working on it, and when he tried to talk us down on the price after we already did the work for him, we should be able to go the other direction.

He never tried it again, and word spread to all of our other customers, and none of them ever tried it. It was nothing but good for us.
