Lets say apple announces leopard in the next few days.
As soon as it's announced if I order a MBP will I DEFINITELY get Leopard installed on that machine (or at least have an install DVD included with the packaging??

Don't want to take any chances.

This MBP is for my mom btw

The answer is no to both of them. It will take some time before new packaged notebooks are actually installed with the new OS. You will get a download option or more likely a minor charge for the DVD delivery.

If you order before the announcement...tough luck.

After the announcement, you will definitely get it for free. If they don't include a Leopard disk (prob. won't be preinstalled...) then you can call them and say "I ordered this after leopard was released, yet my machine only has Tiger!" and they pretty much have no choice but to do it.

If you want to be super safe order it the next day...

Well, if its been announced (or possible even a few days before its announced), then you should get Leopard, either free or discounted. If you bug the Apple support a bit, they'll give in, they're really nice :p.

Some people got it for free, the ones that bugged Apple support a lot.

Then you should wait. Its not guaranteed that you will get Leopard unless it comes shipped with the computer or if Apple makes an announcement.

Where do plan to order from? I'm assuming The [online] Apple Store...

My guess is that the online Apple Store will be temporarily unavailable when Leopard is released. When the store comes back online all new Macs should have updated information that indicates Leopard is now included. To be sure, read the fine print and/or call Apple Sales Support (1-800-676-2775). Apple Sales Support won't answer your questions about Leopard now, but they will after the release information is public knowledge.

call them and tell them you are waiting but want it now. They will discount the purchase by the price of the new OS. That is what they did for me!!

That's a sweet deal!!! Thanks for the tip :D!

Then call back and try to negotiate free expedited shipping. I called to cancel my order and got free expedited shipping and a $50 discount.

You can try :p. Apple customer support is really lenient and they go pretty far to pleasing their customers.
