I agree. I kindo wonder who they are targeting with this machine. It is cheap until you realize it can't realistically function as your only computer. Also, some things, like the lack of Ethernet and 1 USB port, bother me.

True. This is really for someone who already has an imac or other desktop. This seems more like a secondary machine rather than a primary machine for users like use. Still its sweet as hell.

Really a sweet machine and comes with backlit keyboard that I miss on my macbook. Would buy one straight away but I cannot justify this with a macbook of just about 6 months.

Am wondering how you are expected to use the accompanying restore DVDs when it doesnt have any inbuilt drive. Time wil tell. It does come with USB to Ethernet adaptor and DVI adapters.

They're targeting the ultra mobile. And this is a cheap ultra mobile, believe it or not. Most companies use ULV CD units (means slow, but better battery life) and those start around 2500. But yup... pure mobile machine.

I'm just disappointed that they went with a 13". They really should have gone with a 12" MBP. Just my opinion though.

to use the restore discs, you have to use a USB dvd-drive or connect to another computer through wireless. All explained during the key note.

    i'll third that.

macbook air is a second machine. i really have no idea what they were thinking with the macbook air... for one, the name?! also, while it is somewhat smaller than the macbook, its somewhat less powerful, too, with shorter battery life, and it doesn't have the trendy cellular internet option that seems to me to be crucial to the ultralight purpose...

    oh well.

if i were apple i would have done a remake of the 12" powerbook. basically introduce a new, smaller macbook pro model. oh well...

they really should have at least called it a "13 inch macbook pro"

At that price, especially with those specs and lack of features, doesn't make sense either as a primary or secondary machine to me. Can't see any reason to buy one; I'd prefer a white MB, even without a backlit keyboard.

the machine can more than function as a persons MAIN machine.

    you just need:
    a usb hub
    an external usb DVDRW
an external usb HD (cause we know 80gb doesnt cut it)
some form of ethernet hookup, if need be.

i was interested in the machine, because i have all the above already, until i saw its the same price as a MBP. In which case, we all know the best choice there.

my 2.2 macbook will suffice for a while. Im a little disappointed apple!

masterchef makes a great point.... Most of the road warriors I know have one of those cards so they can use their cellular internet service. Thats big marks against this thing.
And battery life... wtf mate... the shortest of the 3.... and yet it is supposed to be the most mobile? Is the battery even user replaceable?

I disagree calling it a MacBook Pro as it lacks a lot of the features that make the MBP "pro". I'm very happy with my new MacBook and really can never see myself using one of these machines. Believe it or not, I need an ethernet port and having my 1 usb port tied up so I can access the internet doesn't cut it.

Ya I agree. This is targeted as something that is nearly never plugged in and there is no replaceable battery?

I think the MBA is an elaborate Apple tool to make owners love their current MB/MBPs more and encourage more MB/MBP sales, lol.

Yeah the macbook air does not appeal to me whatsoever. I too am probably just gonna get the macbook. It be cool if they updated it with LED screen though.

I definitely don't like the Air. No wonder some people did not believe Apple was going to release anything good at MacWorld. This notebook has no market to sell to other than people who already have a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook, iPhone, and iPod Nano. The MacBook Air is an overpriced, paperweight kiosk that is more for conversation than any functionality. Either that, or it's for anorexic, famished fashionistas who only have the strength to carry their purse.

MacBook Air Version 1 is not cleared for take off. Maybe MacBook Air Version 2 may be a better effort. In the meantime, I will stick with my Nike Air Jordan Version 1.

This MacBook Air does not look to be a primary computer in any case. I think this is meant to accompany mobile professionals who have an iMac or Mac Pro at home or the office to use. Its a secondary computer to take along.

I almost feel like i would get a Asus EEE, before I would buy this, if it is a "second" computer... what's funny is that I use my MBP as a "backup" computer now....

Really how tiny does a computer need to be? I have 12.1 U6 from Asus, and I think this is what the MBP 12" should have been, if they can do it, then so should have apple.

Apple really missed out on this one, and they really need to make a 12 inch laptop, thickness does not matter as much as functionality.
